Tata, Hyundai & MG To Showcase Small EVs At Auto Expo 2023

The next edition of Indian Auto Expo is slated to commence in the second week of January 2023. Many automakers including Mahindra, Volkswagen & Skoda and Renault-Nissan have decided to stay away from the next edition of biennial Auto Show. A new media report claims that close to 70 brands will showcase their products (Both 4-wheels & 2-wheels) at the 16th edition of Indian auto show.

The report further claims that the likes of Tata Motors, Hyundai Motor India and MG Motor will showcase several electric models priced below Rs 15 lakh at the Auto Expo. The affordable EVs will target “consumers in the mainstream market to help scale up EV adoption in the country.” The auto event will also provide a single platform for different brands including startups and tech firms to showcase their innovations and connect with policymakers, consumers as well as media.

MG Wuling Air EV

It is a known fact that MG Motor India will showcase its new 2-door electric vehicle at the Auto Expo 2023. The new 2-door model will target the urban commuters. It is based on the China-spec Wuling Air EV and is expected to be priced around Rs 10 lakh. Production of the new model is reportedly to commence in March 2023. The new entry-level compact EV is expected to feature a battery pack of around 20-25kWh and will offer power close to 40bhp and a real-world range of around 150km on a single charge.

Tata Motors plans multiple new electric vehicles for the Indian market. The company will soon start delivering its smallest & most affordable electric, the Tata Tiago EV in January 2023. The new small EV will also be showcased to public at the 2023 Auto Expo. Adding to it, the homegrown automaker is also likely to unveil the Altroz EV and the Punch based EV at the biennial event. Both models are based on the modified ALFA platform, while the Tiago EV is based on the modified X1 platform.

Details about the Hyundai’s affordable EV are yet to be revealed. However, the company is reportedly working on a new electric SUV for the Indian market. It will be a mass-market EV with small battery packs and a low-cost skateboard platform. The production version of the EV is expected to launch sometime in 2024. It is likely to offer a range around 200km – 220km.
