French automaker, Renault is gearing up for the launch of the much-awaited Kiger sub-4 meter SUV in India. It was reported that the company is also developing a new small sedan based on the Kwid platform, codenamed LBA. A new report claims that Renault has decided to not launch a Kwid-based sedan. The company is now focusing on introducing new SUVs in the Indian market.
The original plan was to use Kwid platform to develop 4 new models under 4 meters. The Triber MPV is already on sale, which will soon be joined by the Kiger sub-4 meter SUV. The sedan would be the third model to measure under 4 meters in length and to rival the Honda Amaze, Maruti Dzire, Ford Aspire, Tata Tigor and the Hyundai Aura. This project is not happening, and Renault has decided to introduce a full range of SUVs.
After Kwid, Renault is expected to introduce the next generation Duster SUV. The new model could be offered in both 5-and 7-seat options. While the 5-seater version will rival the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos, the 7-seater model will challenge the Mahindra XUV500, Tata Safari and the MG Hector Plus. Renault aims to focus on higher-proft models with more B and C segment SUVs to join the affordable Kwid, Kiger and Triber.
Renault is also planning to introduce the Kwid electric in the Indian market; however, the launch has been pushed back due to lack of infrastructure in the country. The company is betting big on the Kiger SUV, which is based on the stronger CMF-A+ platform. This platform also underpins the Nissan Magnite.
Renault aims to add another 5,000 units to its monthly sales in India. The company is eyeing to cross 1 lakh sales in 2021. In order to achieve this target, Renault has added 120 touch points in the smaller towns and cities.
