Next-gen Renault Duster: New Platform, Hybrid/Electric Powertrain

We reported earlier that Renault is working on the third generation Duster SUV, which is expected to be launched by 2023-24. The new model will be launched under the Dacia nameplate; however, Renault’s version will also be launched in select markets. The company aims to position the next-gen Renault Duster affordable and capable SUV in international markets.

Speaking to Autocar UK, Duster product boss Julien Ferray said that the current model’s successor must be “the same” car. The company aims to provide a very good price-to-feature ratio. Adding to it, the new model will address customers looking for a simple car which can go off-road. He further confirmed that the Duster’s off-road ability will be a priority for the current model’s successor. The outgoing Duster 4×4 is one of the cheapest 4WD SUVs on sale.

The next-gen Renault Duster will be designed and developed of the Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s CMF-B platform. This platform also underpins the Sandero. The new model is expected to adopt the same plug-in hybrid powertrain as the Renault Captur crossover as well as an all-electric version to be positioned above new Renault 5’s CMF-BEV platform, which is used to develop affordable EVs in the A- and B-segments.

The CMF-BEV architecture is related to the conventional CMF-B structure, which makes it easier to produce different cars at the same location and even on the same line. The overall dimensions including the overhangs and wheelbase will remain same, which will reduce the production cost of the Duster electric. The CMF-BEV platform cannot accommodate a rear electric motor for all-wheel-drive capabilities. The larger CMF-EV platform can accommodate a second motor at the rear.

Renault will also introduce the production version of the Bigster SUV, which is scheduled to be launched by 2025. It will be positioned against the likes of the Nissan Qashqai and the Volkswagen Tiguan. The Bigster SUV will also be based on the CMF-B platform with petrol and hybrid powertrains.
