New Toyota Fortuner With Mild-Hybrid Diesel Engine – More Torque, Mileage

Japanese automaker, Toyota has launched a mild-hybrid version of the Hilux lifestyle pickup truck in the European market. Called the Hilux MHEV, the new pickup will be manufactured in Thailand for the European market. In fact, the new mild-hybrid system will also be introduced in other Toyota models including the new Toyota Fortuner, Land Cruiser Prado and the Land Cruiser 70.

The new Toyota Fortuner is expected to be launched in global markets sometime in 2024. It will receive significant design changes and an all-new interior along with new platform & engine options. The current Fortuner is based on the IMV platform that underpins the Innova Crysta; however, the next-gen model will be designed and developed on an all-new TNGA-F architecture. This platform underpins multiple global cars including the Land Cruiser 300, Lexus LX500d and the Tacoma pickup. This flexible architecture is compatible with different body styles and multiple engine options including ICE and hybrid.

The new Toyota Hilux MHEV is powered by a 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine, which comes with a 48-volt mild hybrid setup. The integration of mild hybrid tech claims to have improved the fuel efficiency by 10% compared to the regular model. The engine is coupled to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The hybrid setup comprises of a 48-Volt battery, a small electric motor generator, and other components. The vehicle also comes with a stop/start system and is claimed to improve the NVH levels.

The electric motor is claimed to provide enhanced torque assist and will support regenerative braking. The company claims that the mild hybrid setup won’t have any impact on the Hilux’s off-road and towing capabilities, and the pickup will continue to offer a water wading depth of 700mm.

The same 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid setup will be offered on the new Toyota Fortuner. The new model is expected to share styling cues from the Tacoma pickup. It will have an aggressive front bumper design for improved off-road credentials, a wider fender flares, a flat bonnet with strong curves & creases, a blacked-out roof with white body work, prominent cladding around flared wheel arches and skid plates. The SUV could also receive a 2.4-litre hybrid turbo petrol engine, which currently powers few Lexus and Toyota models.
