The new Tata Nexon and the Honda Elevate belong to different segments; however, the Japanese SUV is priced very aggressively in the market and offers a great value for money to buyers. The Tata Nexon Fearless Plus S 1.2L DCT dual-tone version would cost you around Rs 17 lakh (on-road New Delhi), while the manual version costs around Rs 15.61 lakh (on-road, New Delhi).

On the other hand, the Honda Elevate manual costs Rs 17.15 lakh on-road in New Delhi, that’s just 1.5 lakh more than that of the Nexon’s manual. The Elevate ZX automatic is priced at Rs 18.45 lakh (on-road, New Delhi), which is close to Rs 1.45 lakh more than the Nexon’s automatic.

The new Elevate is powered by a tried & tested 1.5-litre 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine that also powers the City sedan. This engine churns out a maximum power output of 121PS and 145Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 7-step CVT.

On the other hand, the new Nexon gets a smaller, but a turbocharged petrol engine. It is powered by a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that produces 120PS and 170Nm of torquie. Transmission choices include a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed AMT and a 6-speed dual-clutch or DCT. Moreover, the SUV also gets a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine that is good for 115PS and 260Nm of torque. It can be coupled to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed AMT.

The new Nexon petrol offers multiple gearbox options; however, the Elevate offers tried & tested CVT gearbox option with the rev-happy & the most powerful 1.5L naturally-aspirated engine available in our market.

The new Honda Elevate 1.5 manual version is claimed to offer an ARAI certified fuel economy of 15.31kmpl, which is slightly on lower side. However, the CVT version returns a fuel economy of 16.92kmpl. On the other hand, the Nexon manual is claimed to return an ARAI certified fuel economy of 17.44kmpl that is higher than the Elevate’s manual. The AMT & DCT versions of the Nexon petrol returns 17.18kmpl and 17.01kmpl respectively. The mileage figures of automatic versions of the Nexon and Elevate are very much similar. Moreover, the Honda’s CVT gearbox is proved to more reliable & suits Indian road conditions well compared to DCTs on sale.

Dimensions – Advantage Honda

The new Elevate is the most spacious mid-sized SUV on sale in our market. In fact, it offers more space in the second row than its direct rivals including the Grand Vitara, Seltos and Creta. It measures 4312mm in length, 1790mm in width and 1650mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2650mm. The SUV has a ground clearance of 220mm and a boot space of 458-litres.

The Honda Elevate has a clear advantage over the Nexon when it comes to cabin space. It is 317mm longer and 30mm taller, and has 152mm longer wheelbase compared to the Nexon. While the Nexon has 16-inch alloys wrapped in 215/60 section tyres, the Honda Elevate rides on 17-inch alloys with 215/55 section rubbers. The Nexon has 76-litres smaller boot than that of the Elevate.

The Honda Elevate also offers ADAS tech on the top-spec ZX trim with features like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, collision mitigation braking system, road departure warning and automatic high beam assist. This advanced driver assistance system or ADAS suite is missing in the Tata Nexon.

Verdict

Clearly, the new Honda Elevate makes more sense compared to the new Tata Nexon. In fact, customers can also opt for the VX trim of the Elevate that’s priced very similar or slightly lesser compared to the top-spec Nexon compact SUV. The Elevate offers bigger dimensions, spacious cabin, Honda’s reliability, tried & tested 1.5L naturally-aspirated engine with CVT and ADAS suite.
