The second-generation Mahindra Thar, which was launched in October this year, has been sold out till May 2021. The off-road SUV garnered over 20,000 bookings within a month of its arrival in the market. At present, it commands a waiting period of up to 5-7 months, depending on the variants. In order to reduce its waiting period, the company is planning manufacture 3,000 units on monthly basis from January, 2021.
Speaking to carandbike, Dr. Pawan Goenka, MD, Mahindra and Mahindra has revealed that the company has already commissioned 50% more capacity than what was originally planned. The new Thar has been booked until May, 2021. Recently, the new Mahindra Thar was subjected to the Global NCAP crash tests and managed to score 4-star rating. It gets four-start Global NCAP crash test rating for both adult and child occupant safety.
The off-road SUV provided good protection to the head and neck of the driver and passenger. While the driver chest protection was adequate, the passenger chest protection was good. It offered marginal protection for the driver and passenger knees. The SUV provided full protection to the 18 month old occupant and managed to prevent excessive forward movement of the head of the 3 year old during the impact below the 550mm limit. The tested model was equipped with features such as dual airbags, front seat belt pretensioners, seat belt reminder, ABS (anti-lock braking system) and Isofix child seat anchorage. The carmaker is planning to make front-facing seats as standard on all variants of the SUV. The LX variants that come with the front facing seats are high in demand. The company has already removed the entry-level AX trims that were available with the side-facing bench seats. Unlike the front facing seats, the bench seats missed out on the proper three-point seat belts.
