New Hyundai Verna Vs Honda City Vs Skoda Slavia – Specs Comparison

Hyundai has finally launched the new-gen Verna sedan in the country at an introductory price tag of Rs 10.90 lakh (ex-showroom). The new Hyundai Verna is bigger than the previous model and comes with a new set of engine options. Adding to it, the sedan comes with several segment-first features along with Level 2 ADAS tech. It directly rivals the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Skoda Slavia or VW Virtus and the recently updated Honda City.

The new Hyundai Verna is significantly bigger compared to the previous model. It measures 4535mm long, 1765mm wide and 1475mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2670mm. The new model is 95mm longer, 36mm wider, and the wheelbase is 70mm longer than the outgoing model; however, the height remains unchanged. 

2023 Honda City Hybrid

It’s direct rival, the Honda City measure 4583mm long, 1748mm wide and 1489mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2600mm. On the other hand, the Skoda Slavia measures 4541mm in length, 1752mm in width and 1507mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2651mm. 

The Honda City is still the longest model in its category; however, the Verna has the longest wheelbase in its category. All three sedans ride on 16-inch wheels. The new Hyundai Verna has a boot space of 528-litres, which is also the biggest in its category. The Slavia has a boot space of 521-litres, while the City offers a luggage carrying capacity of 506-litres.

The new Hyundai Verna mid-sized sedan is offered with two petrol engine options – a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol and a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbo. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual, a CVT with 1.5L NA petrol and a 7-speed DCT (Dual-Clutch Transmission) with turbo petrol. The 1.5L naturally-aspirated petrol engine is capable of producing 115bhp and 144Nm of torque. On the other hand, the 1.5L turbo petrol unit produces 160bhp and 253Nm of torque.

The 2023 Honda City sedan is available with two engine options – a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol and a 1.5-litre NA petrol with e:HEV strong hybrid tech with two electric motors. The naturally-aspirated petrol engine is capable of producing 121bhp and 145Nm of torque. This engine is offered with 6-speed manual and a 7-step CVT gearbox options. The strong hybrid engine offers a combined power and torque output of 126bhp and 253Nm respectively. 

Both Slavia and Virtus are offered with two petrol engine options – a 1.0L 3-cylinder turbo and a 1.5L 4-cylinder turbo. While the former is good for 115bhp and 175Nm of torque, the turbo petrol engine churns out 150bhp and 250Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual as standard, a 6-speed torque convertor automatic with 1.0L turbo petrol and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission with 1.5L turbo engine. 

The City is the only model in the category which misses out on the turbo petrol engine. However, it gets a highly fuel efficient Atkinson cycle powertrain with e-CVT.

New 2023 Hyundai Verna Petrol

– The new City is claimed to offer an ARAI certified fuel economy of 17.8kmpl. The same powertrain with CVT delivers 18.4kmpl. The hybrid version is the most fuel efficient in its category with a certified mileage of Rs 26.5kmpl.

– The new Verna 1.5L NA petrol version is claimed to offer 19.60kmpl and 18.60kmpl with CVT & MT respectively. On the flip side, the Turbo DCT & MT returns a certified fuel economy of 20.60kmpl and 20kmpl respectively. 

– The Slavia 1.0L MT & AT offers a mileage of 19.4kmpl and 18kmpl respectively. The 1.5L manual and DSG offers 18.7kmpl and 18.4kmpl respectively.

– The new Verna 1.5L NA version is available in the price bracket of Rs 10.90 lakh to Rs 16.19 lakh. On the flip side, the turbo version is priced in the range of Rs 14.83 lakh to Rs 17.38 lakh. 

– The City 1.5L petrol version is priced at Rs 11.49 lakh for the base variant and Rs 15.97 lakh for the top-spec model. The petrol-hybrid is available in two variants – V and ZX – priced at Rs 18.89 lakh and Rs 20.39 lakh respectively. 

– The Skoda Slavia 1.0L costs Rs 11.29 lakh for the base variant and Rs 15.90 lakh for the top-end variant. On the other hand, the 1.5L turbo version is available in manual and automatic avatar – priced at Rs 17 lakh and Rs 18.40 lakh respectively.
