New-Gen XUV500 To Get Mahindra’s Most Powerful Petrol Engine

Mahindra & Mahindra unveiled an all-new range of turbo-gasoline-direct-injection (TGDI) engines (1.2L, 1.5L and 2.0L) at this year’s Auto Expo. Touted as the mStallion, the new turbo-petrol motors will be used for the new Mahindra models and the upcoming Ssangyong and Ford SUVs. Launched in early October 2020, the second-generation Mahindra Thar is the first production vehicle to feature the 2.0L mStallion petrol engine that’s tuned for generating power worth 152bhp and 300Nm (MT)/320Nm (AT) of torque.

The 2.0L mStallion turbo petrol motor will also be used in the next-generation Mahindra XUV500 and Scorpio, which are due for early 2021. While the 2021 Mahindra XUV500 petrol will deliver a top power of 190bhp and 380Nm of torque, the 2021 Mahindra Scorpio will produced power around 160bhp with 350Nm of torque. The 190bhp, 2.0L turbo-petrol that will debut on the new XUV500, will be the most powerful Mahindra engine so far. The mStallion motor will be offered with an all-new 6-speed manual and an Aisin-sourced 6-speed automatic gearbox.

The carmaker says that the fundamental design of the new mStallion engines will be “fun to drive” with diesel-like character. Furthermore, the new gasoline units will highly fuel efficient and meet the stricter emission standards and CAFÉ (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) regulations. Some of its key features include a variable-displacement oil pump, a low-tension piston pack, a more compact and low-friction cooling and filtration module and an 8mm bush chain to drive the ancillaries.

Besides the new petrol engine, the 2021 Mahindra XUV500 and Scorpio will receive an updated, more powerful 2.2L mHawk diesel engine. While the former will produced a maximum power of 180bhp, the latter one will make a top power of 150bhp with 380Nm. Both manual and automatic gearboxes will be on offer. The new XUV500 and Scorpio will be based on a new platform and witness significant changes inside and out.
