Maruti YFG SUV To Be Powered By Toyota’s Strong Hybrid Petrol Engine

Maruti Suzuki has started testing its new mid-sized SUV, codenamed YFG for the Indian market. The new mid-sized SUV will be positioned against the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, VW Taigun, MG Astor and the Skoda Kushaq. The Maruti YFG mid-sized SUV is likely to be launched by festive season, before Diwali.

The new Maruti YFG mid-sized SUV is reportedly to be powered by a ‘strong hybrid’ petrol engine, which will be sourced from Toyota. The new powertrain will comprise of a petrol engine paired to a small battery. This powertrain will allow the YFG SUV to run purely on electric power for limited distances. This is similar in nature to the one offered in the Camry. This will help Maruti YFG to return higher fuel efficiency compared to its petrol counterpart. Toyota D22 mid-sized SUV will also receive this powertrain.

The new Maruti YFG mid-sized SUV will be based on Toyota’s low-cost DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) platform that underpins the Toyota Raize and the new Avanza. The new SUV will be produced at Toyota’s Bidadi based plant in Karnataka. The SUV will be sold via Maruti’s NEXA dealership network.

The new mid-sized SUV will share styling cues from the Toyota’s global SUVs including the Toyota RAV4 and the Corolla Cross. In fact, the spy images suggest that the SUV shares design cues from the global A-Cross. It features a split headlamp design with LED DRLs, which looks similar to the A-Cross on sale in Europe. The grille will look similar to the new Baleno & the Ertiga. The spotted model was equipped with squared-off wheel arches and diamond-cut alloys.

The upcoming Maruti YFG mid-sized SUV will be equipped with high-end comfort and convenience features. It will have a large touchscreen infotainment system with wireless connectivity, Suzuki Connect, voice commands, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, automatic AC, etc. The SUV could get six airbags, ESC, adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist. The SUV could also get ADAS tech.
