Toyota Yaris Cross SUV Spotted Testing In India – Here’s Why

Note – Earlier we thought it’s a Maruti-Suzuki’a upcoming compact SUV, but upon further investigation we found out that it’s Toyota Yaris Cross. Sorry for the confusion.

Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are jointly working on a new range of products for the Indian market. The JV will introduce a new compact SUV during festive season, before Diwali. The new model will have two different versions – codenamed Maruti YFG and the Toyota D22. Both SUVs have already been spotted testing multiple times on the Indian roads. These SUVs will be positioned against the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos.

Interestingly, Toyota is also testing the new Yaris Cross in India. This global compact crossover has been spotted outside Maruti Suzuki’s plant in Haryana. The new Toyota Yaris Cross model was caught alongside the Vitara Brezza. While the spy video claims that the spotted model is the new Brezza, the sloping roofline and different rear reveals that it is an all-new model.

Toyota Yaris Cross Caught Next To Vitara Brezza

The new Toyota Yaris Cross appears wider than the Vitara Brezza; however, the later looks taller. Moreover, the Brezza has a more boxy profile and the new SUV has more angular design elements and sloping roof.

The new Toyota Yaris Cross was designed and developed for the European markets. In terms of proportions, the new compact SUV measures 4,180mm in length and has a wheelbase of 2,560mm. We expect that Toyota could be using the Yaris Cross for component or platform testing.

Maruti YFG Mid-Sized SUV

The new Maruti YFG will be an all-new product and will be based on a Toyota’s platform. Currently, Toyota is selling the re-badged versions of the Baleno, Ertiga, Vitara Brezza and Ciaz in India and in select international markets. The new mid-sized SUV will be produced at Toyota’s Bidadi plant annd will be shared with Maruti Suzuki.

It will be based on Toyota’s low-cost DNGA platform that underpins the new-gen Toyota Avanza and the Raize. In fact, Toyota is also testing a new MPV, codenamed 560B in India. The new compact SUV will be offered with a strong hybrid powertrain, which is different from the current SHVS mild hybrid system.

On low speeds, the new compact SUV will be capable of running purely on electric mode. This will help Maruti YFG to return higher fuel efficiency compared to its petrol counterpart. The powertrain will comprise of a petrol engine paired to a small battery. It will also come with multiple drive modes such as Electric, Hybrid and Petrol.

Not just hybrid powertrain, the new compact SUV is also likely to get a new 1.5-litre K15C dual-jet petrol engine. This engine will debut in the new Ertiga & the XL6, and is likely to produce close to 115bhp. Both manual and automatic gearbox options will be on offer.
