Maruti XL6 6-Seater Diesel Model In The Works; Launch Timeline

It was reported that Maruti Suzuki is developing the BS6-compliant diesel engine to power its bigger models. However, MSIL hasn’t confirmed anything on the same. The company maintains that the demand for diesel cars will further decline on arrival of CAFE II norms and BSVI Stage 2 emission norms in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

A new media report claims that Maruti Suzuki will soon be ready with the BSVI compliant 1.5-litre diesel engine. This engine is expected to be offered with the upcoming models of the Ertiga, XL6, Ciaz and the Vitara Brezza. The company is reportedly working on this engine for over a year now at its powertrain factory in Manesar (Haryana), which could fill the void of diesel options in its upcoming products.

The diesel 1.5-litre engine is likely to be offered on the new XL6 multi-purpose vehicle, which is reportedly to be introduced around January 2022. This engine could also be offered on the Vitara Brezza, which is likely to be launched in February at the 2022 Auto Expo. The engine will later introduced in the Ertiga MPV.

The 1.5-litre diesel engine is also expected to be offered on the Ciaz mid-sized sedan. The sedan was earlier powered by the BS4 version of the 1.5L diesel engine. The BS4 engine was also offered on the Ertiga MPV. The report further claims that BSVI diesel engine could also power the Toyota’s version of the Vitara Brezza, which is called the Urban Cruiser.

Maruti Suzuki is also readying a wide range of new models for the country. The company’s next big launch will be the next-gen Celerio, which is expected to be launched in September. The launch has been delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic. It will be offered with the 1.0L 3-cylinder petrol engine. The top-spec model could get the 1.2L petrol engine.

The company had introduced the in-house developed 1.5L DDiS diesel engine in the Ertiga and the Ciaz. In the BS4 version, this engine churns out 104bhp of power and 225Nm of torque. It is expected that the BSVI version will offer the same power and torque. This engine could also be fitted with a mild hybrid system to improve efficiency. It will also help MSIL to meet the upcoming CAFE II emission norms.
