Japanese automaker Suzuki is preparing to launch 6 new electric vehicles in our market before the end of FY2030. The company has also released a teaser, which confirms that Jimny & Fronx styled electric vehicles will be launched in our market. Moreover, the teaser also reveals that the Maruti WagonR electric version is still under development.
For people not in the know, Maruti Suzuki has been testing an all-electric Wagon R hatchback since 2018 on the Indian roads. It was reported that MSIL has shelved its plans to launch the WagonR EV. It seems like the company is finally ready to introduce the electrified tall-boy hatchback, which will be positioned against the Tata Tiago EV. The Tiago EV is available at a starting price of Rs 8.49 lakh (ex-showroom). It received over 10,000 bookings within a few days.
Maruti Suzuki in partnership with Toyota is setting up local battery manufacturing to bring down costs. The electric version of the WagonR is likely to be priced under Rs 10 lakh, which will make it a direct rival to the Tata Tiago EV. The teaser reveals that the Wagon R EV looks largely identical to the Japanese-spec model. It is expected to offer a range of around 300km on a single charge, which is similar to the Tiago EV (claimed 315km range).
Maruti Suzuki has officially announced to launch its first electric vehicle in our market in 2024-25. It will be based on Toyota’s 27PL platform, which is an affordable iteration of the global 40PL platform. The new EV will be a production version of the Maruti Suzuki eVX electric concept, which was unveiled at the 2023 Auto Expo.
Suzuki is also preparing an electric iteration of the Jimny lifestyle SUV, which is likely to come with dual motor setup – one for front axle and second for the rear axle. Moreover, MSIL is likely to heavily modify the HEARTECT platform and the modified platform could be used to develop the Suzuki Fronx based electric crossover and the Wagon R EV.
