The Indo-Japanese automaker has brought in its biggest product of the year – the 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny. It has been pitted as lifestyle off-road SUV that’s surely appeal a wider audience. This, of course, is a niche segment in India. Mahindra & Mahindra will soon foray into this space with the 5-door version of the Thar in 2024. Currently, we have Thar’s 3-door version with both 2X4 and 4X4 drivetrain system. Here we put together the prices of both SUVs (4X4 variants only) to see which comes out on top, on paper.
Maruti Jimny Vs Mahindra Thar Price – Petrol
The 5-door Jimny derives its power from the 1.5L, 4-cylinder K15B naturally aspirated petrol engine that’s good enough for 105bhp and 134Nm. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque convertor automatic. The Mahindra Thar (3-door), on the other hand, comes with three engine options – a 113bhp, 1.5L diesel, 128bhp, 2.2 diesel and 148bhp, 2.0L turbo petrol.

The Thar model lineup includes four petrol 4X4 – AX (O) MT Convert Top, LX MT Hard Top, LX AT Convert Top and LX AT Hard Top – priced at Rs 13.87 lakh, Rs 14.56 lakh, Rs 16.02 lakh and Rs 16.10 lakh respectively. The 5-door Maruti Jimny’s Zeta manual and automatic variants cost Rs 12.74 lakh and Rs 13.94 lakh respectively. The Zeta automatic is available at Rs 13.94 lakh and the Alpha AT comes at Rs 14.89 lakh. The dual-tone Alpha variants are being offered at Rs 13.85 lakh (MT) and Rs 15.05 lakh (AT).
With a price gap of up to Rs 2.08 lakh, the Jimny is more affordable than the Mahindra Thar petrol 4X4 variants.

The 3-door Mahindra Thar offers six diesel 4X4 variants, which are priced between Rs 14.44 lakh (for the AX (O) MT Convert Top) – Rs 16.78 lakh (LX AT Hard Top). The AX (O) MT Hard Top, LX MT Convert Top, LX MT Hard Top and LX AT Convert Top variants are available at Rs 14.49 lakh, Rs 15.26 lakh, Rs 15.35 lakh and Rs 16.68 lakh respectively.
Prices of the Jimny’s top-end Alpha AT (both monotone and dual-tone variants) are higher than the Thar’s entry-level diesel variants.
