We reported earlier that Mahindra has patented different nameplates including XUV100, XUV700 and XUV900. A new media report claims that Mahindra has started working on its first-ever SUV-Coupe that was first previewed as the XUV Aero concept unveiled at the 2016 Auto Expo. The production version of the Aero concept is expected to be called the Mahindra XUV900, and is likely to give Mahindra the first-mover advantage in the SUV-coupe segment.
Codenamed W620, the SUV Coupe was put on the back-burner as Mahindra was not confident of a business case back then. Buoyed by the huge success of the Thar, Mahindra is now relooking at this segment. The company would be aiming to sell around 2,000 units of the Coupe SUV, which could cost around Rs 20 lakh.
The XUV Aero concept was inspired by the outgoing XUV500. However, the Mahindra XUV900 four-door SUV Coupe will share the platform and mechanics with the upcoming Mahindra XUV700 7-seater SUV. The SUV Coupe could also share the front fenders, hood and front doors with the 7-seater SUV.
While the XUV Aero concept was equipped with suicide doors, the upcoming XUV900 is likely to feature a conventional front-hinged door setup. Adding to it, the SUV Coupe is not likely to retain the pillarless door design offered on the concept. The cabin is also expected to share the features and dashboard layout from the XUV700.
The Mahindra XUV900 SUV Coupe will be positioned above the XUV700. It is likely to get a more premium cabin and several segment-leading features. The SUV Coupe will also share the engine options fromt the soon-to-be-launched XUV700. It will get the 2.0L mStallion petrol and 2.2L diesel mHawk engines with 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox options.
Mahindra XUV900 SUV Coupe Launch Timeline
The report claims that the Mahindra XUV900 or W620 is still in inital days of development, and is not likely to be launched before 2024. The new model is likely to be designed and conceptualised at the Mahindra Automotive Design Europe Studio.
