Mahindra has launched the 5-seater version of the much-awaited XUV700 SUV. The SUV is priced aggressively at 11.99 lakh, which makes it significantly cheaper than the Tata Harrier and the MG Hector. In the 5-seater SUV segment, Mahindra XUV700 will face competition from the likes of the Tata Harrier, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and MG Hector. The new Mahindra XUV700 5-seater is available in 4 variants – MX petrol, MX diesel, AdrenoX AX3 petrol and AdrenoX AX5 petrol. The Creta is offered in 6 variants – E, EX, S, SX Executive, SX and SX(O). The Creta base model is around Rs 1.84 lakh cheaper than the XUV700 base model. However, the top-end XUV700 5-seater variant is around 2.88 lakh cheaper than the Creta. Mahindra will add new variants to the 5-seater version of the SUV, which will come with more powerful diesel engine and automatic gearbox options.

In terms of proportions, the new Mahindra XUV700 is significantly bigger than the Hyundai Creta. In fact, the 5-seater model is longer and wider than the Alcazar 7-seater SUV. The 5-seater XUV700 is 395mm longer and 100mm wider and 120mm taller than the Creta. In fact, the XUV700 rides on 140mm longer wheelbase.

The XUV700 is available in a single 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. On the other hand, the Creta is offered with two petrol engines – a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated and a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol.
The 2.0L petrol engine is capable of producing 200bhp of power and 380Nm of torque, which makes it the segments most powerful SUV. The Creta’s 1.5L NA engine offers 113bhp and 144Nm of torque, while the 1.4L turbo engine produces 138bhp and 242Nm of torque.
Mahindra has only launched the manual version of the XUV700 5-seater, while the Creta’s 1.5L and 1.4L petrol engines are available with manual as well as automatic gearbox options. The XUV700 will also receive a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox in the coming months.

The 5-seater Mahindra XUV700 is powered by a new 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine, which is capable of producing 155bhp of power and 360NM of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox. The 5-seater model will also get a more powerful version of this powertrain, which will produce 185bhp and 420Nm with MT & 450Nm with AT gearbox. Adding to it, an optional 4WD version will also join the line-up.
The Hyundai Creta is available in a single 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine option, which also powers the Kia Seltos. This engine churns out 113bhp of maximum power and 250Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
Verdict
There is no doubt that Mahindra has launched the XUV700 SUV at a very aggressive price. With the launch of 5-seater XUV700, Mahindra is aiming to grab some market share in the 5-seater mid-sized SUV segment which is currently dominated by Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos. In terms of pricing, size and specifications, the XUV700 5-seater has the upper-hand over the Creta.
