Mahindra & Mahindra, India’s fourth largest passenger carmaker, registered 4% YoY growth with total sales of 20,634 units in January 2021. The company managed to sell 7,567 units of the Bolero as against the 7,233 units of the same month last year. The XUV300 and Scorpio recorded total sales of 4,612 units and 4,083 units opposed to 3,360 units and 5,316 units of January 2020 respectively.
What’s interesting here is the Mahindra Thar recorded its lifetime highest ever month sales of 3,152 units. The off-road SUV has been generating volume since its generation change in October, 2020. Due to high demand, the model is currently observing a waiting period of up to 9 months in select cities.
With an aim to further boost its sales, the carmaker is planning to introduce three new colour schemes (White, Olive and Silver) to the Thar model lineup. The SUV is currently available in 7 exterior shades, namely, Aquamarine, Rocky Beige, Napoli Black, Red Rage, Aqua Marine Galaxy Grey and Mystic Copper.
In coming month, the 2021 Mahindra Thar will also receive a new 180 mStallion petrol engine that’s reported to be more powerful and faster than existing 150bhp, 2.0L petrol motor. The SUV is also available with a 132bhp, 2.2L diesel engine along with 6-speed manual and automatic gearbox options. All variants of the Thar get 4WD (four-wheel drive) system with a manual shift transfer case.
At present, the new Thar is available in 6 diesel and 4 petrol variants, which are priced from Rs 12.10 lakh to Rs 14.15 lakh (all, ex-showroom). The carmaker will soon add a new removable hard-top variant to the SUV model lineup. Recently, the company recalled 1577 units of the new Thar diesel over a faulty camshaft issue.
