Mahindra Thar EV To Enter Production – Confirms Anand Mahindra

The homegrown UV maker, Mahindra has recently showcased the new Thar.e and the Scorpio-N Global Pik Up concepts at an event in South Africa. The Thar EV concept looks very early prototype and questions were asked whether it will enter the production or it is just a prototype to showcase brand’s capabilities. However, Anand Mahindra, Chariperson of Mahindra Group has confirmed that the Mahindra Thar.e will be going into production.

In a tweet, Anand Mahindra said, “Nope. Not just a concept. From the moment we all saw the prototype we were committed to making this a reality…”. He also shared a video of the Mahindra Thar.e concept on X (formely Twitter). However, the company have not shared any further details about the production-ready Thar electric’s launch date. It is most likely to enter the production in 2025-26.

The Mahindra Thar EV concept also previews the brand’s upcoming 5-door Thar lifestyle SUV that is scheduled to make global debut sometime in 2024. The new concept is built on the specialized INGLO-P1 platform, which is designed for an extended range through a blend of lightweight construction and expanded battery capacity.

The Mahindra Thar EV concept has a prolonged wheelbase, ranging from 2776mm to 2976mm, nicely paired with reduced overhangs. The SUV has a segment-largest ground clearance of 300mm. The 5-door Thar.e concept is claimed to offer excellent off-road capability and will have segment-leading approach angle, departure angle, ramp-over angle, and water wading ability.

The concept has squared-off front with a retro-styled stance, a rectangular grille, a newly designed prominent front bumper and a compact windshield. It features two square LED daytime running lamps, a flat roof, massive wheels & off-road tires, LED tail-lights and a tailgate nicely integrating the spare wheel.

Mahindra has not revealed any technical details about the new Thar.e; however, the production version of the SUV could receive a 60kWh or 80kWh battery pack sourced from BYD. The electric motors could be sourced from Volkswagen.
