Mahindra & Mahindra has exciting plans for August, including a global event in South Africa on 15th August 2023 where it will unveil the Scorpio N pickup truck concept. In addition, the company will also showcase the Mahindra Thar electric SUV concept along with its commercial vehicle offerings. While Mahindra hasn’t officially commented on these unveilings yet, it is anticipated to be an exciting event for automotive enthusiasts.
Limited information is currently available about the Mahindra Thar electric SUV. However, it is expected to be based on the same ladder-frame chassis as its internal combustion engine-powered counterpart. This platform is already used for Mahindra’s range of commercial vehicles with electric architecture, which helps reduce development and manufacturing costs. The body-on-frame platform will require some modifications to accommodate the electric powertrain.
Typically, monocoque platforms are considered more suitable for electric vehicles due to their lightweight nature, which contributes to longer range and more space for occupants and electric powertrains. However, there are global examples of electric vehicles based on ladder-frame chassis, such as the Ford F-150 Lightning, which is known for its higher towing capacity and load capacity. Ford’s electric pickup truck comes with the front and rear-mounted electric motor making a combined power of 426bhp in thr SR, 563bhp with the ER variant. Both configurations deliver a torque of 1,051Nm.
The Mahindra Thar electric SUV concept is expected to retain its off-road capabilities with a 4X4 drivetrain setup. It may feature a quad-motor arrangement instead of a dual-motor setup, and reports suggest it could have crab walk capability, allowing all four wheels to turn to around a 45-degree angle. This would make parking in tight spaces easier. The concept might also be capable of making a 360-degree turn when needed.
