Mahindra Thar AX, AX Std Variants Removed; Now Prices Start at Rs 11.90 Lakh

Mahindra & Mahindra has silently removed the entry-level AX and AX Std variants of the new-generation Thar from its official website. The AX Std petrol, AX petrol and AX diesel variants were priced at Rs 9.80 lakh, Rs 10.65 lakh and Rs 10.85 lakh respectively (all, ex-showroom). Now, prices of the 2020 Mahindra Thar start from Rs 11.90 lakh for the AX O petrol variant. While the petrol models cost between Rs 11.90 lakh – Rs 13.55 lakh, the diesel variants are available in the price range of Rs 12.10 lakh – Rs 13.75 lakh (all, ex-showroom).

The second-generation Thar has been receiving overwhelming response from buyers. The off-road SUV gathered over 20,000 bookings so far. At present, it commands a waiting period of up to 7 months (depending on the variant). The carmaker has assured that it will ramp up its production capabilities. To mark the onset of Diwali festivities, Mahindra delivered 500 units of the new Thar between 7th – 8th November.

2020 Mahindra Thar Interior

The 2020 Mahindra Thar comes with 2.2L mHawk diesel and 2.0L turbo petrol engines delivering claimed power of 130bhp with 300Nm and 150bhp with 320Nm respectively. Both motors are available with the 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox options. The off-road SUV gets 4WD (four-wheel drive) system with a manual shift transfer case as standard feature.

If reports are to be believed, the home-grown carmaker is planning to launch a 5-door version of the Thar in India. The bigger version will be a more practical machine for day-to-day driving purpose. The new model will sit on a slightly longer wheelbase and have more cabin space to offer. While the 5-door Thar will share its platform, design elements and features with the 3-door model, it’s likely to have different approach, departure and ramp up angles. It will be put up against the upcoming new-generation Force Gurkha and 5-door Maruti Jimny.
