Mahindra & Mahindra’s prolonged testing phase for the 5-door variant of the Thar lifestyle off-road SUV has culminated in recent spy images confirming its readiness for production, signaling an imminent market launch. Although the official launch date and comprehensive details are yet to be disclosed by the carmaker, industry expectations suggest that the Mahindra Thar 5-door SUV could make its showroom debut around mid-2024. Positioned in competition with the 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny, priced between Rs 12.74 lakh and Rs 15.05 lakh (ex-showroom), Mahindra is anticipated to position the 5-door Thar at approximately Rs 15 lakh for the base variant and Rs 16 lakh for the top-end variant. The design and styling of the Thar 5-door will exhibit subtle variations from its 3-door counterpart while retaining the original stance and signature elements. Notable changes include a newly-designed front grille, LED projector headlamps, and a tweaked fog lamp assembly. The side profile, apart from new alloy wheels, will largely remain unchanged, featuring pillar-mounted rear door handles. The rear will showcase updated taillamp clusters.
Spy images hint at a significant addition to the Mahindra Thar 5-door – an electrically adjustable single-pane sunroof, elevating the SUV’s comfort and appeal. Inside, a lighter shade theme, roof-mounted speakers, an updated center console, touchscreen infotainment system, new front armrest, and a rear parking camera contribute to the SUV’s enhanced interior experience.
Under the hood, the new Mahindra Thar 5-door is expected to offer versatility with the 2.0L turbo petrol and 2.2L turbo diesel engines. The former is projected to deliver an impressive 200bhp with torque values ranging from 370Nm to 380Nm. The latter, available in two configurations, will offer 172bhp with 370Nm to 400Nm and 130bhp with 300Nm. Both engine options will be mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox, with the flexibility of opting for either a 4X4 or 4X2 drivetrain system.
