We reported earlier that Kia Motors is planning to enter into the mid-sized MPV segment, which is dominated by Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and the Toyota Innova Crysta. The company is reportedly readying an all-new MPV, codenamed KY for the Indian market. The new MPV is expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2022, most probably in January. A possible launch at the 2022 Auto Expo can’t be ignored.
Seltos Platform
The upcoming Kia KY MPV will be designed and developed on the Seltos platform, which also underpins the second generation Hyundai Creta. This platform is compatible to accommodate different body styles and engine options including hybrid, petrol and diesel. In fact, Hyundai is also readying a new MPV and a 7-seater Creta on this platform. The MPV is likely to be based on the longer wheelbase, which should help Kia engineers to create more space inside the cabin.
6-and 7-seat Configurations
The new Kia MPV is expected to be offered with 6 and 7-seat configurations. The 6-seater model will have captain seats for the second row, while the 7-seater will have bench-type seat. It is likely to come with a flexible seating options with sliding as well as foldable seats.
Engine Specs
The upcoming Kia MPV is expected to share the engine options with the Seltos. It is likely to come with two engine options – a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol and a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel. While the former is good for 113bhp and 144Nm of torque, the oil burner produces 113bhp and 250Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic gearbox options will be on offer.
High-end Features
Similar to the Seltos, Kia will give all the high-end comfort and convenience features to the KY MPV. In fact, the interior and dashboard layout could be similar to the Seltos. It is likely to come equipped with a large freestanding touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, a digital instrument console, Hyundai BlueLink connected car tech, automatic AC, cruise control, etc.
Competition & Expected Pricing
The upcoming Kia MPV is expected to be positioned between the Maruti Ertiga and the Toyota Innova Crysta. It will rival the high-end variants of the Ertiga, and the entry-level and mid-variants of the Toyota Innova. In terms of pricing, it will be positioned against the Mahindra Marazzo. We believe that the upcoming Kia KY MPV could be priced between Rs 10 lakh to Rs 16 lakh.
