In September 2023, the Indian automobile industry celebrated a positive turn of events with almost 3.62 lakh passenger vehicle sales. This marked a noteworthy YoY (year-on-year) growth of over 2 percent and a MoM (month-on-month) increase of 0.7 percent, setting the stage for further sales uptick as the festive season approaches.

India’s Top OEMs Sales Figures

Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest OEM, ascended to the summit as the country’s premier SUV manufacturer, thanks to its well-received models like the Brezza, Grand Vitara, and Jimny. The Indo-Japanese automaker achieved a total retail figure of 1,50,812 units, a slight bump from 1,48,380 units in September 2022.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor India reached a significant milestone by achieving its highest-ever monthly sales, totaling 54,241 units. Noteworthy contributors to this feat were the Creta, Venue, and Exter models. Tata Motors, however, faced a YoY sales dip of 6.0 percent, recording a total of 44,810 units compared to 47,655 units in the same month the previous year. The decline in sales could be attributed to the impending launch of the facelifted versions of the Harrier and Safari.

Mahindra & Mahindra secured the fourth position with sales totaling 41,267 units, and the XUV700, in particular, achieved its highest-ever monthly sales figures. Toyota Kirloskar Motor continued to perform admirably, driven in part by its re-badged Maruti Suzuki models, registering sales of 22,168 units and experiencing an impressive year-on-year growth of over 44 percent.
