Diesel cars/SUVs have always been popular among Indian buyers. In the past few months, however, the market witnessed a shift preference towards petrol vehicles that affected carmakers’ growth and market share.
The reasons behind this shift are the inching gap between petrol and diesel prices and increasing prices of the diesel vehicles post BS6 implementation. Despite the change, the diesel SUVs are still in demand. Here, we have listed India’s 10 top-selling diesel SUVs of February 2021.

The new Hyundai Creta tops the chart with total sales of 7558 units (diesel only). The carmaker says that over 60% of the sales came from the 1.5L U2 diesel variants, followed by 51% from the higher trims and 20% from automatic variants. The next in the list is Toyota’s Innova Crysta diesel that recorded sales of 5886 units. The MPV comes with a 166bhp, 2.7L petrol engine and both manual and automatic gearbox options.
The list of top 10 selling diesel SUVs includes three Mahindra models, namely, Bolero, Scorpio and Thar stood at 3rd, 4th and 7th positions respectively. While the Mahindra Bolero and Scorpio diesel registered total sales of 4843 units and 3532 units respectively, the carmaker sold 2228 units of the diesel Thar.
Kia’s Sonet subcompact SUV and Seltos mid-size SUV ranked at number 5 and 6 with sales of 3397 units and 2228 units respectively. The diesel models of both SUVs have around 42% (Sonet) and 38% (Seltos) contribution in totals sales of their models.
Tata Motors retailed 2030 units of the Harrier diesel, thus making it the 8th top-selling diesel SUV of the last month. The SUV comes with a 170bhp, 2.0L Kyrotec diesel engine that can be had with either a manual or automatic gearbox. While the Toyota Fortuner diesel stood at number 9 with total sales of 2030 units, the Ford EcoSport diesel raked 10th with sales of 1948 units.
