The Indian automobile industry witnessed year-on-year growth in June 2023, thanks to new product launches, improved semiconductor supply, and reduced waiting periods. A total of 3.27 lakh units of passenger vehicles were sold last month, compared to 3.21 lakh units in the corresponding month the previous year, accounting for a YoY growth of 2 percent. However, these figures declined by 2 percent compared to 3.35 lakh units sold in May 2023.

The game is getting stronger for SUVs, driven by high demand and the arrival of new models. Looking at the list of India’s top 10 selling cars in June 2023, six models were SUVs and four were hatchbacks. The Maruti WagonR (17,481 units) emerged as the top-selling hatchback, followed by the Swift (15,955 units), Baleno (14,077 units), and Alto (11,323 units).
In the SUV segment, the Hyundai Creta retained the top spot with total sales of 14,447 units, compared to 13,790 units in June 2022, registering a YoY growth of 5 percent. Tata Nexon and Punch SUVs stood at second and fourth place, respectively, with sales of 13,827 units and 10,990 units. Hyundai’s Venue was the third top-selling SUV in June with sales of 11,606 units. Maruti Suzuki’s Brezza and Grand Vitara recorded total sales of 10,578 units and 10,486 units, respectively.
Car manufacturers are gearing up to launch new models ahead of this year’s festive season. Maruti Suzuki, for instance, has already introduced the Fronx compact crossover and Jimny lifestyle off-roader. On 5th July 2023, they will announce the prices of the Invicto strong hybrid MPV. These three utility vehicles are expected to strengthen the company’s market presence in the SUV segment and help them achieve their sales targets.
Honda Cars India is set to enter the midsize SUV segment with the all-new Elevate, while Kia will introduce the updated Seltos. Tata Motors has plans to release mid-life updates for three of its popular SUVs in the coming months, namely the Nexon, Harrier, and Safari. On the other hand, Mahindra & Mahindra does not have any major product launches scheduled for this year.
