Hyundai Ioniq 5 Electric SUV & NEXO FCEV Showcased In India

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has inaugurated its new corporate headquarters at Gurugram. At the inaugural event, Hyundai has showcased two of its zero-emission models that are on sale in select international markets. The company displayed the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric crossover and the NEXO fuel-cell electric vehicle.

For people not in the know, the Hyundai Nexo FCEV has already been unveiled in India. The vehicle was showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo. It has already received type approval in India. If media speculations are to be believed, the NEXO could be India’s first FCEV. The vehicle could be introduced as a CBU model.

The Hyundai NEXO is claimed to offer the highest range, as it recently beats the Toyota Mirai. The NEXO FCEV has also received 5-star safety rating in Green NCAP tests. It comes with a 95Kw fuel cell powering an electric motor that is good for 161bhp and 395Nm of torque. It is claimed to deliver a WLTP certified range of 666km and offers a top speed of 177kmph. It can do 0 to 100kmph in 9.2 seconds.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 pure electric crossover is the first model under Hyundai’s new Ioniq electric sub-brand. The Ioniq 5 is built ipon Hyundai’s dedicated BEV architecture called Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). This platform will also underpins the upcoming Ioniq 6 sedan and the Ioniq 7 SUV.

In the global markets, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is offered with two battery sizes – 72.6kWh and 58kWh. Both comes with rear-wheel or all-wheel-drive layouts. The 72.6kWh battery version is claimed to offer a maximum range of around 470-480kms. It supports 800V battery technology, which gives ultra-rapid charging. The Ioniq 5 is compatible with up to 220kW DC charging, which allows the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes.

The top-spec Hyundai Ioniq 5 crossover features a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive layout that offers a combined power of 306bhp and a peak torque of 605Nm. The crossover is claimed to achieve 0-100kmph in just 5.2 seconds before hitting a top speed of 185kmph. The entry-level variant with 58kWh battery has a 169bhp, single motor. This rear-wheel-drive model accelerates to 100kmph from zero in just 8.5 seconds.
