Hyundai Motor India has recently introduced its most compact and affordable SUV, the Exter, to challenge the dominance of the Tata Punch in the micro SUV segment. The prices of both micro SUVs are more or less similar. Hyundai’s new Exter is priced within the range of Rs 6 lakh – Rs 9.32 lakh. It is important to note that these are introductory prices and are bound to increase after a certain duration.

On the other hand, the Tata Punch costs between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 9.52 lakh. While the Punch automatic variants are priced from Rs 7.50 lakh to Rs 9.52 lakh, the Exter AMT variants are available at Rs 7.97 lakh – Rs 10 lakh. Tata is also planning to introduce the Punch CNG in the coming months. The Exter CNG S and SX variants are being offered at Rs 8.24 lakh and Rs 8.97 lakh, respectively.

The micro SUV from Hyundai is the first vehicle in its segment to offer a dashcam with dual cameras and an electric sunroof with voice commands, along with 6 airbags as standard fitment. The top-end trim exclusively offers front and rear mudguards, BlueLink connectivity, OTA updates, H2C with Alexa, and ambient sounds of nature.

Additional features such as a wireless charger, leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, cruise control, cooled glove box, engine start/stop button, paddle shifters, automatic climate control, electronic stability control, hill assist control, vehicle stability management, rear AC vents, Type C fast charger in the front row, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, digital instrument cluster, speed alert system, and ABS with EBD are also available.

The Punch features a 7.0-inch part-digital instrument cluster, a 7.0-inch Harman touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, keyless entry and go, cruise control, auto climate control, power-folding wing mirrors, a rearview camera, a USB charging socket, a 4-speaker audio system, anti-glare inside and rearview mirrors. Its standard safety features include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, Isofix child seat anchors, and brake sway control.

The overall length, width, and height of the Exter stand at 3815mm, 1710mm, and 1631mm, respectively. The micro SUV sits on a 2450mm long wheelbase.

Tata’s mini SUV is longer and wider than the Exter but shorter than its new rival. In fact, the Punch’s wheelbase is 50mm shorter, measuring 2445mm. Its dimensions are 3827mm in length, 1742mm in width, and 1615mm in height.

Both micro SUVs have a fuel tank capacity of 37 liters.

Hyundai’s new mini SUV is powered by a 1.2L, 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that can be paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. The engine generates a claimed power output of 83bhp and 114Nm of torque.

The Exter CNG, equipped with a manual gearbox, produces a power worth 69bhp and 95.2Nm of torque. Tata Motors will roll out the Punch CNG in the next couple of months.

The carmaker claims that the Exter manual and AMT models offer a mileage of 19.4kmpl and 19.2kmpl, respectively. The factory-fitted CNG version promises a fuel economy of 27.10 km/kg.

Powering the Punch is a 1.2L petrol engine that delivers 86bhp and 113Nm of torque. It comes with two gearbox options – a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT. The manual version features engine start/stop technology that enhances its fuel efficiency.

Tata’s micro SUV offers a claimed mileage of 20.09kmpl (manual) and 18.8kmpl (automatic).
