Honda City Hybrid To Offer Over 27kmpl; Launch In 2022

Honda has officially announced that the hybrid version of the City sedan will arrive in the next financial year, April 2022 to March 2023 period. The report claims that the new Honda City Hybrid is most likely to be the most fuel efficient car in the country.

It is also reported that the India-spec Honda City hybrid will return mileage close to the Malaysian as well as Thai-spec models. The sedan is expected to return over 27kmpl of mileage, as the Thai-spec and Malaysian-spec models deliver 27.8kmpl and 27.7kmpl respectively. In real world conditions, the new model is expected to return around 20kmpl.

With claimed fuel efficiency of over 27kmpl, the new Honda City hybrid will be the most fuel efficient car in the country. The new hybrid sedan comes equipped with a 1.5-litre petrol engine that runs a more efficient ‘Atkinson Cycle’. The petrol engine produces 98bhp of power, while the electric motor offers 109bhp. The vehicle offers a maximum torque of 253bhp; the petrol engine offers 127Nm and the electric motor offers 253Nm. It is 0.5 seconds quicker than the regular City sedan.

In the City hybrid, the electric generator and electric motor are combined together and attached to the end of the engine. The engine turns the generator, and also powers the electric motor, which in turn spins the wheels and sends electricity to the lithium ion battery in the boot.

The hybrid version of the City is around 110kg heavier than the regular City. It has a boot space of 410-litres, which is around 100-litres less than the regular model. This model also comes with rear disc brakes as well as an electric parking brake.

The global-spec model is called the Honda City RS, and also gets ADAS radar based safety systems and remote engine start. The new model will be assembled in India, as most of the components including the hybrid will be imported. It is expected to be priced between Rs 17.5 lakh and Rs 19 lakh.
