Future Mahindra SUVs Worth Waiting For

Homegrown UV maker, Mahindra is working on multiple new SUVs and facelifts of existing models for the Indian market. The company will soon introduce the updated Bolero and Bolero Neo (Re-badged TUV300) in the market. Adding to it, the Marazzo MPV and the KUV100 NXT will be discontinued in the near future.

Mahindra will gradually discontinue slow-selling products, and will focus on lucrative segments that is SUVs. The company is developing multiple new SUVs in the price bracket of Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh. Pratap Bose, the man who designed Nexon, Altroz, Harrier and Safari, is reportedly to join Mahindra Automotive Design Studio in Europe, and will play major role in designing future Mahindra products. Mahindra XUV700

New Mahindra XUV700 SUV

Mahindra has officially announced to launch the new XUV700 7-seater SUV in the third quarter of 2021, before Diwali. It will come as a replacement for the popular XUV500, which will be temporarily discontinued upon XUV700 launch. The new model will be based on the new monocoque platform, which will also support a 4WD system.

Expected to be priced between Rs 14 lakh and Rs 22 lakh, the new Mahindra XUV700 will rival the MG Hector Plus, Tata Safari and the upcoming Hyundai Alcazar. The new model will be offered in 6-and 7-seat layout. It will also come with Level 2 Autonomous Driving Assist System (ADAS). ADAS features will include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot detection and others. It will be offered with two engine options

The new Mahindra XUV700 will be offered with two engine options – a 2.2-litre 4-cylinder mHawk diesel and a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder mFalcon, turbo-petrol. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed Aisin-sourced torque convertor automatic.

Next-gen Mahindra Scorpio

Mahindra is testing the new generation Scorpio SUV, codenamed Z101, which is likely to be sold alongside the existing model. The company hasn’t reveal the launch timeline for the new Scorpio; however, the new model is expected to be launched in early 2022. The 2022 Mahindra Scorpio will be based on the modified version of the ladder frame chassis, which also underpins the new Thar off-road SUV.

The new model will grow in size, which should allow Mahindra engineers to create more space inside the cabin. It will also receive a forward-facing third row seat, a factory-fitted electric sunroof, a large touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, cruise control, automatic AC and other high-end features.

The 2022 Mahindra Scorpio will share the engine options with the new Thar, but in a different state of tunes. The petrol version will receive the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, which is expected to produce around 152bhp. The oil burner is a new 2.2-litre turbocharged engine, which is likely to offer 158bhp of power. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic. The SUV will get AWD or 4×4 option.

Mahindra Thar 5-door

The 5-door version of the Thar off-road SUV has received official approval, and the testing of the SUV with Bolero’s body is expected to begin soon. The new, bigger version of the Mahindra Thar will be a more practical option for daily driving purpose. It is likely to sit on a longer wheelbase and offer more cabin space. The 5-door Mahindra Thar is expected to be launched in 2022.

While the bigger SUV will be designed on the same GEN3 ladder-frame chassis, it will carry a differently designed body with additional doors. The 5-door Thar is expected to source powertrains from the existing model. It will get the 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 152bhp and 300Nm (MT)/350NM (AT), and a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel that is good for 132bhp and 300Nm of torque. Both engines can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. A 4X4 system and a manual-shift transfer case with a low ratio is standard across the Thar model lineup.

New Mahindra XUV500

The homegrown UV maker, Mahindra will bring back the XUV500 moniker with an all-new mid-sized SUV. The next-gen Mahindra XUV500 is reportedly to be launched by 2024. The current model will be replaced by the XUV700 7-seater SUV. While the existing XUV500 is 4.6 meters long, the all-new model will measure around 4.3-4.4 meters in length.

The SUV will be based on the elongated version of the XUV300’s platform. It will rival the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos. The Mahindra XUV500 or S301 will be powered by a revised version of the XUV300’s 1.5-litre diesel engine, which is compliant to meet the tighter BS6 Phase II emission standards coming in 2023. The SUV will also receive the 1.5-litre mStallion turbocharged petrol engine, which can produce up to 163bhp of power.

Mahindra XUV900 SUV Coupe

Mahindra is also working on an all-new XUV900 SUV Coupe, which will be based on the XUV700 platform. The new model is reportedly to be launched by 2024. It is likely to give Mahindra the first-mover advantage in the SUV-coupe segment. For people not in the know, Mahindra had showcased the XUV Aero Coupe SUV concept based on the XUV500 at the 2016 Auto Expo.

While the XUV Aero concept had suicide doors, the new XUV900 is likely to feature a conventional front-hinged door setup. It is expected to share the features and dashboard layout from the XUV700. The SUV Coupe will also share the engine options fromt the soon-to-be-launched XUV700. It will get the 2.0L mStallion petrol and 2.2L diesel mHawk engines with 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox options.
