Delhi Govt Issues Notice To Tata Motors: Nexon EV Owner Complaint

Tata Nexon EV owner claims that his electric SUV has never provided a range of more than 200km, while the claimed range is 312km (ARAI certified) on a single charge.

The Delhi Transport department has issued a show-cause notice to Tata Motors over the complaint filed by Tata Nexon EV owner. The DTD is seeking Tata’s reply on complaint that one of its electric car models failed to meet the specified range on a single charge.

The complainant said that his Tata Nexon EV has failed to provide the specified 312-km range on a single charge. This model was bought from a Tata dealer at the Safdarjung Enclave and registered on December 3, 2020.

The show-cause notice issued to Tata Motors said, “it has been informed that while the vehicle model is specified to provide a 312-km range on a single charge, the vehicle owned by the said customer has never provided a range of more than 200km”.

The owner of the Tata Nexon EV claims that he followed all the instructions/advices given by the dealer. However, no improvement was noticed and his vehicle is claimed to provide not more than 200km range on a full charge. “Therefore, a show-cause notice is issued as the vehicle has failed to provide an optimal range to the consumer as provided by the OEM,” notice read.

The Delhi Transport Department has also ordered the OEM to send its representative to appear before the department officer at 12 noon on February 15. The notice further stated that if no representative of the OEM appears before the transport officer on the designated date and time, further action including ‘delisting of the Nexon EV from the subsidy-eligible e-vehicles’ can be considered.

Delhi Electric Vehicle (EV) policy is giving a purchase incentive of Rs 10,000 per kWh battery capacity on buying an electric four wheeler with a cap of Rs 1.5 lakh per vehicle. The owners of the first 1,000 e-cars in Delhi will be eligible for the incentive.

The Tata Nexon EV purchased from Tata Motors’ Safdarjung Enclave dealer was approved under the eligibility conditions of the Delhi EV policy. Tata Motors’ spokesperson said that all possible measures are being taken to address this issue. He further said that the range specified on a single full charge i.e. 312km for Nexon EV is certified by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), which is the official body that independently tests all mass-produced vehicles under standard test conditions. The actual range achieved in EVs depends on various factors like usage of AC, driving style and the actual conditions in which the vehicle is driven.
