BYD Sea Lion – Is It A New Electric Car For India?

BYD (Build Your Dream) stands as one of the world’s largest manufacturers of electric vehicles and batteries. Renowned for its expertise in battery technology, particularly lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), the automaker boasts a diverse range of consumer-focused EVs and commercial EVs. In the Indian market, BYD offers two prominent EVs – the E6 MPV and the Atto 3 SUV. Recent developments suggest that the company is gearing up to introduce a new electric car, indicated by its trademark of the name “BYD Sea Lion.”

Presently, it remains unclear whether the BYD Sea Lion will emerge as an entirely new product or if it will be the company’s global model adapted with a distinct nameplate for the Indian market. Detailed product specifications have yet to be disclosed. However, speculations indicate that the Sea Lion might be offered in two variants – a 204bhp rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version and a 530bhp all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant equipped with dual electric motors. Expected to feature an 82.5kWh battery, the new BYD Sea Lion could offer an impressive range of up to 700km on a single charge. This positioning sets it up as a potential contender against the world’s best-selling electric car, the Tesla Model Y.

Earlier this year, BYD introduced the Seal electric sedan on its official Indian website. Built on the brand’s e-Platform 3.0, the Seal offers two battery pack options – 61.4kWh and 82.5kWh. These battery configurations provide ranges of 550km and up to 700km (as per CLTC) respectively. Its front and rear axle-mounted electric motors deliver maximum powers of 218bhp and 312bhp respectively, culminating in a combined power output of 530bhp. The Seal incorporates a dual-motor and all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100kmph in a mere 3.8 seconds.

The BYD Seal comes equipped with an array of advanced features, including a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a Head-Up Display (HUD), two wireless charging pads, a premium audio system, and a drive mode selection scroll wheel. Additionally, amenities such as a heated windscreen enhance its overall appeal. The electric sedan boasts dimensions of 4800mm in length, 1875mm in width, and 1460mm in height.
