Honda Cars India had launched the Jazz hatchback-based SUV in early 2017. Called the Honda WR-V, the compact SUV has been doing really well against established models and other rivals from crossover segment due to its similar styling and proximity to them in terms of pricing. Despite being sub-compact in size, the WR-V offers best-in-class cabin space with a highly-practical layout. It’s also the only car in its segment to offer sunroof. Most importantly that makes one of the most desirable SUV is its highly-efficient engine setup.
The compact SUV derives its power from the 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engine available with a 5-speed and a 6-speed manual gearbox options. The gasoline unit makes 89bhp with 110Nm, the oil burner develops a maximum power of 99bhp with 200Nm. Honda also aims to expand the SUV carline with a more powerful petrol variant. The current line of engines are claimed to deliver 17.5kmpl in petrol and 25.5kmpl in diesel guise. With such impressive mileage figures, the WR-V tops our list of best mileage SUVs in India. While the vehicle is based on Honda’s premium hatchback, Jazz, it gets new elements that saves it from being mistaken as its twins.

The home-grown utility vehicle maker, Mahindra & Mahindra introduced the new KUV100 NXT during festive season 2017. The updated model comes with some considerable cosmetic upgrades along with tuned engines. Visually, the compact SUV receives new headlamps, the XUV500-inspired grille, revised front bumper, a faux skid plate finished in brushed aluminium and more plastic cladding around the fog lamps. Other updates include new alloy wheels, slightly different ORMs, new clear lens taillamps with chrome bezels and black highlights and revised rear bumper.
Inside, the car gets a new all-black theme with brushed silver inserts. The high-spec trim is exclusively offered with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with audio and navigation system. The KUV100 NXT comes with two powertrains – a 1.2-litre mFalcon G80 petrol and a 1.2-litre mFalcon D75 diesel – paired to a five-speed manual gearbox. However, the engines have been tuned for enhanced fuel economy and better NVH levels. While the petrol model is claimed to deliver an ARAI certified fuel economy of 18.4kmpl, the oil burner returns 25.31kmpl.

Maruti’s ace subcompact SUV, the Vitara Brezza is the third best mileage SUV in India. The SUV was launched in India last year with a diesel engine only, missing out on the petrol unit. Powered by the tried and tested 1.3-litre oil burner sourced from Fiat, the Vitara Brezza delivers a top power of 88.5bhp at 4000rpm and 200Nm of torque at 1750rpm. In terms of fuel economy, the SUV delivers a claimed mileage of 24.3kmpl as rated by ARAI. The SUV which is available only with a manual variant in diesel guise will soon receive a petrol engine.
Feature-wise, the Vitara Brezza is a loaded machine. Equipment such as automatic headlamps, rain sensing auto wipers, electric folding ORVMs with turn indicators, dual tone interior, reverse parking camera, cruise control with steering mounted controls, SmartPlay infotainment system with Apple CarPlay with in-built navigation with Mapcare, etc. are reserved for the top-spec trim.

Next model to join in our list of best mileage SUVs in India is the new Maruti Suzuki S-Cross facelift. The new model is available with 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine with SHVS mild hybrid technology. It is slightly more fuel efficient than the previous model. With the addition of SHVS technology, the crossover sees significant increase in fuel economy. The new model is claimed to return an ARAI certified fuel economy of 25.1kmpl. Compared to the older version rated at 23.65kmpl, the S-Cross facelift gives additional 1.45kmpl.
Some of the major updates made on the S-Cross facelift include a new chrome grille, revised projector headlamps with LED DRLs, pronounced front bumper with a wider airdam, re-designed fog lamps, a new set of alloys and updated LED taillamps. Inside, the car receives a new touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Mirror Link support and revised dashboard, new upholstery.
