Bajaj EV Plans Revealed – 1 New Chetak Every Year For Next 3-5 Years

Bajaj Auto is planning to further expand its electric vehicle (EV) model lineup in the coming years. Speaking to a media publication, MD of Bajaj Auto, Rajiv Bajaj has revealed that the company aims to launch a new electric two-wheeler every year for the next 3-5 years. The new Bajaj electric scooters or bikes, which will come under the Chetak sub-brand, will have different powertrain configurations and cater different segments.

At present, the company’s primary focus is to strengthen important aspects such as technology, software, hardware, quality, supply chain, distribution and consumer experience. The Pune-based two-wheeler maker aims to manufacture 50,000 electric scooters on annual basis in the next fiscal year. Currently, it produces 8,000 – 9,000 units per year. The automaker plans to manufacture 2,50,000 units per year at its new EV-dedicated Akurdi facility in Pune. The plant, which has been made with an investment of Rs 300 crore, is likely to roll out its first vehicle by June 2022.

Bajaj Chetak Premium

Recently, a new Bajaj electric scooter was spotted testing in the country. It’s likely to come as a more affordable alternative of the Chetak electric scooter. The spy images reveal that the new e-scooter will carry sharper design language than the e-Chetak. The model features apron-mounted headlamp, rear bumper plate mounted on the swingarm, rear turn indicators and taillamp. The instrument console seems to be carried forward from the Chetak. Though, the new model will have fibre body panels and miss out on the sequential turn indicators and keyless operation.

While there is no official word on the name and details of the upcoming new Bajaj electric scooter, it’s reported to be named Bajaj Fluir or Fluor. The automaker trademarked both nameplates in the country. It’s likely to come with the 3.8kW/4.1kW electric motor delivering power to the rear wheel. It’s the same powertrain that does duty in the Bajaj e-Chetak.
