All-New Toyota Avanza (Suzuki Ertiga Rival) Debut This Year

Indonesian media reports that the all-new Toyota Avanza is expected to be launched in the next few months. It was speculated that the new model will be unveiled in December 2020; that didn’t happen. The new MPV is rumoured to be designed and developed on the DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) platform, which is basically the low-cost version of the TNGA platform.

Toyota’s low-cost brand, Daihatsu is also working on an all-new 6-seater MPV for the Indonesian market. The new model is likely to be the next generation Daihatsu Xenia. The new Avanza and Xenia will have three row of seats and six seats. It is rumoured that the new MPV could be based on the DN Multisix concept, which was unveiled in GIIAS 2017 and the Tokyo Motor Show.

Daihatsu DN Multisix

Daihatsu has already launched the Rocky sub-4 meter SUV on this platform. This model was first showcased as the DN Trec concept alongside the Multisix. In fact, Toyota has also introduced the Raize sub-4 meter SUV on the same DNGA Platform. Adding to it, Toyota and Suzuki JV is also developing a mid-sized SUV and an all-new MPV on this platform in India.

This development suggests that the India-spec MPV could share styling cues and engine specs from the new Avanza MPV. The company could also bring in the new Avaza in our market. The all-new Toyota Avanza is expected to be offered with two engine options – a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol and a 1.2-litre hybrid option. In future, the MPV could also receive an electrified version.

The 1.0L turbocharged petrol engine currently powers the Toyota Raize and the Daihatsu Rocky. This engine is capable of producing 98bhp of power and 140Nm of torque. Transmission options are likely to include a 6-speed manual and a CVT automatic. The 1.2L hybrid engine currently powers the C-HR in the select international markets. This engine offers 114bhp of power and 185Nm of torque.

Talking about the Toyota-Suzuki partnership, the new JV will launch a new mid-sized MPV and a mid-sized SUV in India by 2022. Adding to it, Toyota will also introduce the re-badged version of the Ertiga and the Ciaz in India. The C-MPV will be positioned between the Ertiga and the Innova Crysta, and will rival the Toyota Innova Crysta.
