A Camouflaged Tata Safari Spotted – Petrol Engine, AWD Variant?

Tata Motors had introduced the new Safari 7-seater SUV earlier this year. Based on the Harrier SUV, the new Safari is available in front-wheel-drive layout and in diesel engine option only. The SUV has received positive response from buyers, as it maintains a strong sales in the competitive premium mid-sized SUV segment.

Interestingly, Tata Motors is testing the new Safari SUV in different parts of the country. A new camouflaged prototype of the Tata Safari has been spotted in Pune. Details about the new model are yet to be revealed. The spotted model looks exactly similar to the existing model, which suggests that the changes could be made under the bonnet.

Tata Motors could be testing the AWD version of the Safari SUV. At the time of the launch, Tata officials said that the company could introduce the 4WD version of the new Safari if there is enough demand. The new SUV is based on the OMEGA-ARC platform, which is derived from the Land Rover’s D8 architecture. This architecture supports AWD system as well as electric & hybrid powertrains.

Tata Motors is also reportedly working on the petrol version of the Safari SUV, which has already been spotted testing. It is reported that Safari 7 seater SUV could receive a newly developed turbocharged petrol engine, which could produce around 160bhp of power and 250Nm of torque.

The petrol engine will be a direct-injection (DI) unit, which will be more powerful, efficient and release less emissions compared to the MPFI (Multi Point Fuel Injection) engines.  Tata could also give a petrol hybrid engine to meet the upcoming CAFE II emission norms in 2022.

The Safari is currently powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine that produces 170bhp of power and 350Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
