American UV maker, Jeep has officially announced that the upcoming 7-seater SUV for developing nations will be called the Commander. The Jeep Commander 7-seater SUV will first go on sale in the Brazilian market. In this article, we talk about top 5 things you should know about the upcoming Jeep Commander.

Compass Platform

The new Jeep Commander will be based on the FCA’s Small-Wide 4×4 platform, which also underpins the Compass SUV. However, Jeep engineers will modify this platform to accommodate a longer wheelbase and bigger SUV. This platform will be stronger and stiffer, and will also be used to develop the second generation Renegade.

Twin-Turbo Charged Diesel Engine

It will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine, which also powers the Compass. it is reported that the Commander could get a twin-turbocharged version of the diesel engine, which is likely to produce around 200bhp and over 400Nm of torque. It will be paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission.

6-and 7-seat options

The new Jeep Commander will be offered in 6-and 7-seat options. The six-seater model will come with captain seats for the second row, while the 7-seater Commander will get bench type seat for the second row. The seats will be flexible, to be folded down to create extra luggage space.

Design & Interior Details

If media reports are to be believed, the SUV’s wheelbase will be increased significantly to accommodate third row of seats. The SUV will have extended rear overhang and bigger glasses. The SUV’s design is likely to be inspired by the bigger Grand Cherokee L. it will have exclusive full-LED headlights with LED DRLs. The DRLs are interconnected by a chrome bar on the bumper. The SUV will have completely new rear profile, featuring narrow taillights. The taillights are very close to the small rear window, which is inspired by the new Jeep Grand Cherokee L.

The Jeep Commander will share the dashboard design with the Compass; however, it will have new premium finish. It will get gold-plated chrome band on the panel, while the central console has soft touch materials. It will get the free-standing touchscreen infotainment system with UConnect 5 software, panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, a digital instrument console, powered front seats and leather upholstery.

India Launch & Competition

The Jeep Commander 7-seater SUV is scheduled to make global debut in the mid-2021. The SUV could be launched in India in the first half of 2022. In India, it will be positioned against the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, VW Tiguan AllSpace and others.
