5-Seater Kia Carens In The Works – Report

Kia is preparing to launch multiple new models along with updated versions of its existing line-up in the country. A new media report claims that the Korean automaker is working on a new base variant, which will also include a 5-seater model. The new base variants will sit below the premium trim in the Carens’ line-up. Adding to it, the company will also launch the Carens with a diesel iMT powertrain.

The new 5-seater Kia Carens & iMT variants are likely to be launched in the next few months. The Carens will also be upgraded to meet the upcoming BS6 Phase II emission norms. The 5-seater Kia Carens is likely to be offered with naturally aspirated petrol and diesel powertrains. The new base variants will make the Carens more accessible.

The Kia Carens will be the only MPV in its category with an option of a 5-seat layout. The MPV directly rivals the Maruti Suzuki’s Ertiga and the XL6. The Carens is available at a starting price of Rs 10.19 lakh, while its competitors – the Ertiga and the XL6 – are priced at Rs 8.49 lakh and Rs 11.41 lakh respectively. The new entry-level variants would cost under Rs 10 lakh and will be positioned against the Ertiga.

The 5-seater Kia Carens is likely to miss out on some features like leatherette seats and second-row folding armrest. The MPV will continue to offer safety features like 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, ESP and others.

Kia Carens Diesel iMT

The MPV’s diesel version will also receive a new iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission). The current model is offered with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox options. The current 1.5L diesel engine will soon be upgraded to meet the Real Driving Emission norms.

The existing 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine will be compliant with E20 fuel and RDE emission norms. Moreover, the MPV is also likely to receive a new 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine as a replacement for the discontinued 1.4L turbo petrol engine. The new powertrain produces 160bhp and 253Nm of torque. This engine will be offered with a 6-speed manual & 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
