5 Lakh Tata Cars Sold In 2022; Growth Better Than Maruti, Hyundai

Year 2022 was surely a great one for Tata Motors that managed to sell over half a million passenger vehicles. The company crossed 5 lakh cumulative wholesale mark last year, which is the Indian carmaker’s highest ever sales since its Indian operations in 1998. The home-grown carmaker registered an YoY sales growth of 59 percent against 3.31 lakh units of 2021.

While the Tata Nexon remains the top-selling model from its product portfolio, the Punch, Tiago, EVs and CNG models generated volume for the company in 2022. The carmaker recorded better sales growth than the country’s largest passenger vehicle makers – Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor India.

Speaking a media publication, Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director – Passenger Vehicle and Electric Vehicles at Tata Motors, said that the company aims to achieve double digit sales growth this year. It’s “hopeful of robust sales performance this year on the back of new launches as well as better traction for its internal combustion engine models, electric vehicles and CNG trims.”

Last year, Tata Motors retailed nearly 43,000 units of electric vehicles (including Nexon EV Prime, Nexon EV Max and Tigor EV). The home-grown automaker will further expand its EV product portfolio with the launch of Punch EV and Tiago EV Blitz.

Tata’s Future Plan

Tata Motors has planned a range of new models for the next 2-3 years. This year, the company will introduce the CNG versions of its two highly popular models – Punch and Altroz. Both vehicles made their public debut at the Auto Expo 2023. The Tata Tiago EV Blitz Edition along with the new Harrier and Safari Red Black Editions will also go on sale in 2023.

The carmaker has confirmed that it will bring in the Hyundai Creta rival sometime next year. Based on the Tata Curvv concept, the SUV will come with petrol and electric powertrain options. Similarly, the new Tata Sierra SUV will be offered with both powertrains sometime in 2024 or 2025. The electric iteration of the Tata Harrier is also slated to launch in 2024.
