Mahindra & Mahindra recently confirmed 9 new SUV launches for the Indian market right from the new Scorpio to a new Coupe SUV and two electric vehicles. The plan also includes the 5-door version of the second-generation Thar that’s reported to hit roads sometime next year. It will appeal buyers who require a spacious and practical family SUV with rugged looks and some off-roading capabilities. Compared to the 2-door version, the 5-door Mahindra Thar will sit on a longer wheelbase.
Most of its design elements along with the platform will be carried over from its smaller sibling. Under the hood, the 5-door Mahindra Thar is likely to feature the same 2.2L mHawk diesel and 2.0-L mStallion petrol engine. However, these powertrains could be tuned for producing extra power. Transmissions will also be carried forward from the 2-door model – i.e. 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
India’s largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki is also planning to bring in the 5-door iteration of the Jimny off-road SUV. Based on the global-spec Sierra, the 5-door Maruti Jimny will measure 300mm longer and have 300mm longer wheelbase and than its smaller sibling. The SUV’s long—wheelbase version will measure 3850mm in length, 1645mm in width and 1730mm in height. Compared to the 3-door Sierra, the bigger Jimny will be 100kgs heavier. The latter will have a kerb eight of 1190kg.
While there is no information about its engine setup, the India-spec model is likely to come with the 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine making power worth 101bhp and 130Nm of torque.
The 5-door Maruti Jimny will carry the brand’s global design language and share its design bits with its new 3-door version. Interior is likely to feature a multi functional steering wheel, leatherette seats, updated instrument console, a touchscreen infotainment system with latest smartphone connectivity, front and rear armrest and more.
