Launched in 2020, the new-generation Mahindra Thar off-road has been generating volume for the home-grown automaker in the country. While the existing model comes with 3-doors and 4-seats configuration, the company will soon introduce its 5-door version that’s currently in its testing phase. The 5-door Mahindra Thar is reported to make its first public appearance at the 2023 Delhi Auto Expo, followed by its market launch.
While the 2-door Thar as a lifestyle vehicle appeals individual buyers, the new 5-door model will target customers who need more practical yet rugged SUV. Compared to the existing version, the 5-door Mahindra Thar will have a longer wheelbase and additional rear doors. Its overall length will be more than the standard 2-door Thar. Its rear seat will be wider and ‘breakover’ angle could be reduced. The SUV might come with entirely new body panels.
Most of its design and features will be similar to the 2-door Thar. Some of its key highlights will include pronounced wheel arches, a high-mounted stop lamp, squarish LED taillamps and a tailgate mounted spare wheel. The 5-door Thar will underpin an extended version of the ladder frame chassis. Just so you know, the new Mahindra Scorpio N sits on the same stretched version of the Thar’s ladder frame chassis.

For power, the 5-door Mahindra Thar will use the 2.2L mHawk diesel and 2.0L mStallion petrol engines. Both motors will be sourced from its 2-door version. The oil burner makes a top power of 132bhp and 300Nm of torque and the gasoline unit delivers 152bhp with 300Nm of torque. It could be offered with a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox. Similar to the 2-door Thar, the 5-door version will have 4X4 system and a manual-shift transfer case with a low ratio as standard fitment.
More details on the Mahindra Thar 5-door SUV will be revealed in near future. Stay tuned to IndiaCarNews.
