Mahindra & Mahindra might choose India’s 75th Independence Day to unveil the 5-door Thar off-roader SUV, as it did with the second-generation Thar. The company is organizing an event in South Africa between 15-16th August 2023 that further fuels the speculations. The 5-door Mahindra Thar is likely to go on sale in the second half of this year. It’s essentially the long-wheelbase (LWB) and more practical version of the Thar that will go up against the 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny. The Jimny is reported to go on sale in the first week of June 2023.
Compared to its 3-door version, the 5-door Thar will have longer wheelbase (around 300mm) that will ensure more cabin space. The spy images reveal that it will have individual rear seats. Most of its features will be similar to its younger sibling. Though, the carmaker might offer an updated touchscreen infotainment system with Mahindra’s AdrenoX software, a sunglass holder and front and centre armrest.
Design and styling of the 5-door Mahindra Thar will also be similar to its three-door version. It will retain the signature boxy stance with round headlamps, pronounced wheel arches and tailgate mounted spare wheel. What will be changed could be its body panels and alloy wheels. Powering the new Thar 5-door SUV will be the 2.2L diesel and 2.0L turbo petrol engines sourced from its 3-door sibling. While the former makes 172bhp with 370Nm and 130bhp with 300Nm, the latter delivers 200bhp with 370-380Nm. Both manual and automatic gearboxes will be on offer. Similar to the 3-door Thar that comes with both 4X2 and 4X2 drivertrain options, the 5-door Mahindra Thar will come with both options. Though, the 4X2 system will be offered only with the more powerful 2.2L diesel engine.
