The sub 10 lakh four-wheeler space is one of the most popular segments in India, with some of the top-selling models accounting for a huge chunk of sales. In other words, it could rightly be referred as the money-spinning segment with majority of volumes drawn by niche models such as Honda City, Maruti Vitara Brezza and the likes. In fact, City has been the most profitable product for the Japanese automaker in India. While we have already witnessed launch of some of the highly anticipated vehicles in the current year, there is lot more coming up in the next couple of years. The South Korean automaker has confirmed an all-new compact hatchback for the Indian market. Internally known as Hyundai AH, the new entry-level small car is likely to revive the Santro brand in the country. Scheduled to launch this year, this new hatch will be positioned between Eon and Grand i10. Prior to its launch, the new Santro might have its public debut in its pre-production form at the 2018 Auto Expo. Under the hood, the hatchback might house a 1.1-litre iRDE and a 1.2-litre Kappa petrol powertrains. The carline could be offered with two transmission options – a 5-speed manual and an AMT. If media reports are to be believed, the next-gen Santro will be Hyundai’s first car to feature an AMT (automated manual transmission) gearbox.

It’s no secret that Mahindra & Mahindra is working on a sub-4 meter SUV that will be positioned against the Tata Nexon, Maruti Vitara Brezza and Ford EcoSport. Codenamed S201, the compact SUV is based on the SsangYong’s Tivoli’s X100 platform. If reports are to be believed, this model could be named Mahindra XUV300; however, nothing official on the same has been revealed. The new Mahindra compact SUV might have its world premiere at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo in February, followed by the launch later 2018. Interestingly, Mahindra’s new 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine will debut on this new compact SUV. The petrol version of the car will use an all-new 1.2-litre turbocharged direct injection engine, which is likely to produce around 140bhp of power. Both manual and automatic versions of the SUV will be on offer. This model will be one of the most awaited upcoming cars under 10 lakh in India.

The next upcoming car under 10 lakh price is Maruti’s flagship hatchback Swift. The Indo-Japanese carmaker has stopped the production of the current-generation Swift to make way for the new one. The Swift’s new model will make its official debut at the 2018 Auto Expo, set to begin from February 9, 2018. Sporting radical changes, Swift looks more evolved than the current model. The car will receive prominent styling updates on the inside along with a host of new tech. Major change that has been made to the car is its underpinning. The hatchback’s new-gen model uses Suzuki’s HEARTTECT platform, which is already used in the new Dzire. Though, it will retain the current engine lineup that includes 1.2-litre petrol & 1.3-litre oil burner. Additionally, there could be a CVT option along with the standard five-speed manual gearbox.

First previewed at the 2012 Auto Expo, the Jimny is likely to head here with a new nameplate. If reports are given any prominence, it could either be called Gypsy or Samurai. With high level of localisation, Jimny is expected to carry a lucrative price tag. Reports in media suggest that India-made Jimny could be exported to overseas markets such as South-East Asia, North America and Europe with India being the mother plant. It is expected that Suzuki could share underpinnings with Ignis, new Dzire and Swift. The off-roader will be based on a solid ladder-on frame chassis, and come with a host of new features. As for the engines, expect it to either get Suzuki’s 92bhp, 1.0-litre Boosterjet unit or the 1.2-litre engine making 110bhp.

Aiming further expand its MPV lineup, Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch an all-new compact MPV based on the Wagon R hatchback. In this segment, the company currently has Ertiga generating good volume for the company. Similar to its hatchback sibling, the Wagon R MPV will carry a tallboy design. While the vehicle will share styling cues with its donor hatchback, on the inside it will get two additional seats to accommodate seven occupants. Maruti will also add some new bits to the MPV to give it a different identity from Wagon R. Engine options on offer might include a 1.0-litre K10 unit or the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol unit paired to a manual and AMT gearbox. This means, there will be no diesel engine on the carline. Set for a launch in 2018 or 2019, the Wagon R MPV is among the most awaited upcoming cars under 10 lakh.
