New Upcoming Cars Under 10 Lakhs

The sub 10 lakh four-wheeler space is one of the most popular segments in India, with some of the top-selling models accounting for a huge chunk of sales. In other words, it could rightly be referred as the money-spinning segment with majority of volumes drawn by niche models such as Honda City, Maruti Vitara Brezza and the likes. In fact, City has been the most profitable product for the Japanese automaker in India. While we have already witnessed launch of some of the highly anticipated vehicles in the current year, there is lot more coming up in the next couple of years. If you are planning to buy a new car that falls in the same price band, here’s a complete list of the upcoming cars under 10 lakhs slated to launch in India in the next two years.

1. New-generation Hyundai Santro

South Korean automaker has confirmed an all-new compact hatchback for the Indian market.  Internally known as Hyundai AH, the new entry-level small car is likely to revive the Santro brand in the country. Scheduled to launch this year, this new hatch will be positioned between Eon and Grand i10. It is expected to be launched before Diwali, 2018. The company has confirmed that the new model will have a tall-boy stance, which suggests that a crossover-like profile could be offered with the hatchback. It will be positioned below the Grand i10 and will rival the likes of Tata Tiago, Maruti Celerio and Renault Kwid 1.0.

Under the hood, the hatchback might house a 1.1-litre iRDE and a 1.2-litre Kappa petrol powertrains. The carline could be offered with two transmission options – a 5-speed manual and an AMT. If media reports are to be believed, the next-gen Santro will be Hyundai’s first car to feature an AMT (automated manual transmission) gearbox.

2. Mahindra XUV300

It’s no secret that Mahindra & Mahindra is working on a sub-4 meter SUV that will be positioned against the Tata Nexon, Maruti Vitara Brezza and Ford EcoSport. Codenamed S201, the compact SUV is based on the SsangYong’s Tivoli’s X100 platform. If reports are to be believed, this model could be named Mahindra XUV300; however, nothing official on the same has been revealed. Homegrown UV maker has already confirmed that the compact SUV will be launched by the end of this year. This compact SUV will share most of its features, body panels and design cues from the Tivoli. Though, it will have an all-new front fascia. Adding to it, the SUV will come with two seating layouts – 5 and 7. The seven-seater model will measure above 4 meter in length and will challenge the likes of Hyundai Creta and Renault Duster.

Interestingly, Mahindra’s new 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine will debut on this new compact SUV. The petrol version of the car will use an all-new 1.2-litre turbocharged direct injection engine, which is likely to produce around 140bhp of power. Both manual and automatic versions of the SUV will be on offer. This model will be one of the most awaited upcoming cars under 10 lakh in India.

3. New Maruti Future S

Next in our list of upcoming cars under 10 lakhs is the new Maruti Future S concept. This model was unveiled at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. Designed in India, the concept previews an all-new design of Maruti’s future compact SUV. This will be the company’s first budget SUV in India. Featuring SUV-like stance and bold presence, the Maruti Suzuki Future S will rival several entry-level cars including Hyundai’s upcoming small car, Renault Kwid 1.0L and Mahindra KUV100 NXT.

This small SUV is based on Maruti Suzuki’s new generation HEARTECT platform. Design highlights include new LED headlamps with LED DRLs, chrome grille, sloping-type roofline, bright silver skid plates, etc. This entry-level SUV is expected to be powered by a 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine that is good for 82bhp and 113Nm of torque. The company could also use the 1.0L K-Series engine that powers the Celerio.

4. Maruti Suzuki Jimny

First previewed at the 2012 Auto Expo, the Jimny is likely to head here with a new nameplate. If reports are given any prominence, it could either be called Gypsy or Samurai. With high level of localisation, Jimny is expected to carry a lucrative price tag. Reports in media suggest that India-made Jimny could be exported to overseas markets such as South-East Asia, North America and Europe with India being the mother plant. It is expected that Suzuki could share underpinnings with Ignis, new Dzire and Swift. The off-roader will be based on a solid ladder-on frame chassis, and come with a host of new features. As for the engines, expect it to either get Suzuki’s 92bhp, 1.0-litre Boosterjet unit or the 1.2-litre engine making 110bhp.

5. Maruti Wagon R MPV & WagonR 2018

Aiming further expand its MPV lineup, Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch an all-new compact MPV based on the Wagon R hatchback. In this segment, the company currently has Ertiga generating good volume for the company.  Similar to its hatchback sibling, the Wagon R MPV will carry a tallboy design. While the vehicle will share styling cues with its donor hatchback, on the inside it will get two additional seats to accommodate seven occupants. Maruti will also add some new bits to the MPV to give it a different identity from Wagon R. Engine options on offer might include a 1.0-litre K10 unit or the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol unit paired to a manual and AMT gearbox. This means, there will be no diesel engine on the carline. Set for a launch in 2018 or 2019, the Wagon R MPV is among the most awaited upcoming cars under 10 lakh.

Adding to it, Maruti Suzuki will also launch the new WagonR in the country. The vehicle has already been spotted testing on Indian roads. It will continue to feature the tall-boy stance; however, the hatchback will get new body panels, grille and tail-lamp design. The cabin will be all-new, featuring new dashboard and a touchscreen infotainment system.

6. New Nissan Micra

New generation Micra hatchback is the next model in our list of upcoming cars under 10 lakhs in India. The new-generation Micra is already on sale in the European markets. However, the India-spec model will be based on a new low-cost CMF-A+ platform. It will be bigger and more spacious than the outgoing model. In terms of features, the new model will get touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity features, automatic climate control, rear parking camera, LED DRLs, etc.

The hatchback will be bigger and more premium than the current model. It will be pitted against the likes of Maruti Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20 and Honda Jazz. The hatchback will share mechanics with the existing models. It will be powered by a 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engine; however, both engines will be tuned for more power and fuel efficiency.

7. Datsun Cross 2018

Nissan’s low-cost brand, Datsun will launch the production version of the GO Cross concept in the Indian market in 2018-19. Called Datsun Cross, this small SUV has already been launched in the Indonesian market. This model is a seven-seater crossover based on the GO+ MPV, but it comes with significant changes inside and outside. It shares most of its body panels with the GO+ MPV. Design highlights include body cladding, integrated roof spoiler, new front and higher ground clearance, etc.

Inside the cabin, the small SUV gets a new dashboard, a touchscreen infotainment system and newly styled air-conditioning vents. For passengers’ safety and security, this SUV gets dual-front airbags, ABS, stability control, rear parking sensors and seatbelts for all three rows as standard. It is powered by a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine paired to either a CVT automatic or a five-speed manual unit. Upon its launch, this crossover will challenge the likes of Tata Nexon, Honda WRV and Maruti Vitara Brezza.

8. New 2018 Renault Duster

Next on our list of upcoming cars under 10 lakh slab, is the new-generation Renault Duster. The new Renault Duster made its world debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2017. While the testing for the new-gen Duster has already started in Europe, the model will ostensibly come to India sometime in 2018-19. Unlike the global model, the India-bound Duster will use the same underpinnings from the existing model. In aesthetic terms, the compact SUV will receive copious updates on the outside and inside. Besides the cosmetic updates, the car’s new model will receive a range of new comfort and connectivity features. While there is yet no clarity on the engine choices, Renault is likely to retain the current set-up along with an all-new unit.

9. All new Maruti WagonR

Another model that makes it to our list of the upcoming cars under 10 lakh, is the new-generation Maruti WagonR. The company has already started testing the new car in India. Already on sale in the Japanese market, the new-gen WagonR is based on Suzuki’s new HEARTECT platform that also underpins the Swift and Dzire. The small car will receive prominent design changes and better equipped cabin.

If reports are to be believed, Maruti Suzuki will also launch a 7-seater derivative of this MPV in India. Production of the new model is likely to commence in September, while launch could take place in October-November. Besides regular features, the new model is likely to be equipped with Suzuki’s smartplay infotainment system. Though, this feature will be restricted to the top-spec model. Mechanically, it will remain unchanged, albeit the 1.0-litre petrol engine is likely to be calibrated for better response and high efficiency. Both manual and AMT options will be on offer.

10. Hyundai Carlino Compact SUV

Next model in our list of upcoming cars under 10 lakhs in India is Hyundai’s sub-4 meter SUV – codenamed HND. Hyundai had showcased the Carlino compact SUV concept at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo. The SUV is set to enter into production form, and is likely to be unveiled at the next year’s biennial event. To be positioned below the Creta, the SUV will be a sub-4 meter SUV and is likely to be based on the Grand i10 platform. It is expected to be powered by a small capacity 118bhp, turbocharged petrol engine. The diesel version will get a 1.4-litre U2 CRDi unit. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual and an automatic unit.

11. New Volkswagen Polo

The German premium carmaker will launch the next generation VW Polo hatchback, which is likely to be based on Volkswagen’s MQB-AO platform. The company is aiming to localise this platform in India to introduce several of its global cars. The new model is longer, wider and more spacious than the previous model. VW has already unveiled the new Polo in the European markets. It continues to feature VW’s evolutionary styling with sharp body creases, large stance, chiselled sides and modish cues. The cabin of the SUV features a high placed touchscreen, virtual cockpit digital instrument display from Audi TT, etc. It will be powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG automatic unit.

12. Tata 45X

At the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo, Tata Motors had showcased the 45X premium hatchback concept. This model previews the brand’s future premium hatchback, which will be developed on Tata’s new AMP (Advanced Modular Platform). The new model will rival the likes of Maruti Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20 and Honda Jazz. Design inspiration for the car comes from Tata’s new IMPACT 2.0 design philosophy.

The hatchback will be equipped with several modern technologies like touchscreen infotainment system, height adjustable drivers’ seat, multi-functional steering wheel, automatic climate control, etc. It is expected to share mechanics with the Nexon compact SUV. While the petrol version will get a 1.2-litre Revotron engine, the oil burner will be a 110bhp, 1.5-litre Revotorq unit. Both manual and automatic versions of the car will be on offer.
