After conquering the affordable hatchback segment, Maruti Suzuki is now aiming to achieve the same feat in the fast growing SUV segment. This segment is currently ruled by Hyundai, Mahindra and Tata Motors; offering a wide range of products. However, MSIL is now readying at least 4 new SUVs for the domestic market.
Maruti Suzuki YTB sub-4 meter SUV
It is reported that Maruti Suzuki is preparing a new subcompact SUV, which will be positioned between the S-Presso and the Vitara Brezza. Codenamed YTB, the new subcompact SUV will be based on the Heartect platform that underpins the Baleno and the Swift. This model will directly rival the newly launched Tata Punch.
The new Maruti Suzuki YTB subcompact SUV is most likely to be powered by a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine that powers the Baleno, Swift and the Dzire. This engine could receive a SHVS mild-hybrid system for improved efficiency. Adding to it, the powertrain could be more powerful than the one offered in the Baleno. The new Maruti YTB could be unveiled in 2022.
Next-gen Maruti Vitara Brezza
Maruti Suzuki will introduce the second generation Vitara Brezza sometime in 2022. The new model will be based on the advanced version of the Heartect platform. The platform is reportedly to be modified for improved safety and security. The next-gen Brezza will retain the original design with modern design elements.
The SUV will also be equipped with modern day features like a bigger and advanced touchscreen infotainment system, connected car tech, factory fitted sunroof and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The new Vitara Brezza will be powered by a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine with a stronger hybrid system.
5-Door Suzuki Jimny
Japanese automaker, Suzuki is preparing a 5-door version of the Jimny off-roader that has been spotted testing in Europe. The same model will also be launched in our market in 2022. The new 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny will be based on the Jimny Sierra. It will ride on 300mm longer wheelbase, and the length of the SUV will be increased by 300mm. The increase in wheelbase and length will help in offering more space inside the cabin. It will measure 3,850mm in length, 1,645mm in width and 1,730mm in height. The SUV will have a wheelbase of 2,550mm, while the ground clearance stands at 210mm. It will have a kerb weight of 1190kg, which is 100kgs higher than the 3-door Sierra.
The new Suzuki Jimny LWB is expected to be powered by a 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine with mild hybrid system. This engine produces 100bhp of power and 130Nm of torque. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque convertor automatic. The international-spec model is likely to get a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a mild-hybrid system.
Maruti-Toyota Mid-Sized SUV
Maruti Suzuki and Toyota joint venture is preparing a new mid-sized SUV for the Indian market. It will be positioned against the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun and the MG Astor. The launch of the new model was scheduled in 2022; however, it is most likely to be delayed to 2023. The new mid-sized SUV will be produced at Toyota’s facility in Bidadi, Karnataka
The new mid-sized SUV will measure around 4.3 meters in length.It is reported that the new model will be based on Toyota’s new low-cost DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) that also underpins the Toyota Raize sub-compact SUV. This platform is designed for emerging markets. The new SUV is likely to get the Suzuki’s tried & tested 1.5-litre petrol engine with a stronger hybrid system. In the current form, this engine produces 104bhp and 138Nm of torque. It was reported that Suzuki is also developing a 1.2L turbocharged petrol engine, which could power4 the new SUV. The company could also use the 1.4L Boosterjet engine that powers the global-spec Swift Sport.
