Volkswagen aims to tap the growing electric vehicle (EV) market with three new SUVs under its revised ID model strategy. The plan outlines the electric iteration of the Tiguan SUV, Trinity EV and a small EV. The Volkswagen Tiagun EV will be the first model to debut in 2025, followed by the small EV SUV in 2026 and Trinity EV SUV in 2028. Volkswagen Tiguan EV
Compared to the VW ID 4 and ID 5, the VW Tiguan will carry more conventional design language and upright stance. The electric SUV is likely to be offered with both 4WD (four-wheel drive) and RWD (rear-wheel drive) options. It will be designed on Volkswagen’s new MEB+ platform that will support new battery technology, autonomous capabilities and promise a higher range (up to 700km). The architecture will significantly improve charging times with possible charging speeds of 175-200kW in the future. The company will use its MEB+ platform for 10 new Volkswagen electric cars by 2026.
Volkswagen Small EV
The carmaker is working on an entry-level electric SUV that will be sold alongside the Volkswagen T-Cross in the global markets. The model could be named Volkswagen ID 2X and it’s likely to share several design bits with VW Group’s Small EVDerek Reilly Cupra’s Urban Rebel concept. It will be the most affordable model to come the company’s ID SUV family. Volkswagen Group’s new manufacturing facility near Barcelona could serve as production hub for the new small electric SUV. It will underpin the smaller MEB architecture and expected to come with the 38kWh and 56kWh battery pack options. The small EV’s range might between 290km – 418km.
Volkswagen Trinity EV SUV
The Trinity EV SUV will be a premium crossover that will be produced at Volkswagen’s Braunschweig R&D centre in Germany. In the company’s global model lineup, the new electric compact SUV will sit between the Tiguan and Touareg. It can be had with either RWD long-range or dual-motor performance drivertrain options. The new VW Trinity EV SUV will be designed on Volkswagen’s Scalable Systems Platform (SSP). It will be the most advanced and expensive upcoming new Volkswagen electric SUVs.
