Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has revealed the all-new Multivan 7-seater premium MPV. The new 2022 Volkswagen Multivan comes with a fresh design, more flexible interior, improved connectivity, and for the first time, a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The 2022 Volkswagen Multivan is based on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform instead of the Transported platform, which was used in the VW Caravelle MPV. The Multivan measures 4,973mm in length, 1,941mm in width and 1,903mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 3,124mm. The company is also offering a longer version, which measures 5,173mm in length.
The 2022 Volkswagen Multivan has a longer wheelbase and wider, lower profile, all designed to improve aerodynamics, lower fuel consumption and increase range. The model is available with wheels up to 19″, and in three specifications: “Multivan”, “Life”, and “Style”.
The MPV gets panoramic glass roof with LowE laminated safety glass, an electrically-operated rear hatch and power sliding doors. The sliding doors can be operated via gesture control for ease of entry. It comes equipped with LED headlamp, which can be upgraded to IQ.LIGHT- LED Matrix headlight. The IQ.LIGHT system also features an illuminated LED lateral bar in the radiator grille as a further element of the daytime running lights.
The 2022 Volkswagen Multivan second row can be moved 180 degrees to create a conference style seating configurations. There is an innovative multi-function table designed for the new Multivan. Using the central track, it can be moved between any of the seating rows, and for the first time can be used as a centre console between the front seats. The table, which is completely removable, features adjustable height, three cup holders, and a storage bin.
The MPV is offered only with an automatic DSG gearbox controlled via shift-by-wire technology, and an electronic button for the parking brake. The base model offers a luggage space of 469-litres, which can be extended to 1,844-litres by folding the third row and to 3,672-litres by folding the last two rows. The maximum boot space is 4,053-litres in the longer version fitted with a panoramic glass roof.
The new Multivan is fitted with a 10.25-inch digital instrument console and a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity and e-SIM based connected car tech. It comes with a Harmon Kardon sound system with 14 high-end loudspeakers, a 16-channel Ethernet amplifier with 840 watts of music output, and four sound settings.
The new VW Multivan eHybrid features a 150PS, 1.4L TSI engine with an 85kW electric motor, which offers a combined power output of 218PS. The eHybrid uses a bespoke six-speed DSG gearbox. The 13kWh lithium-ion battery is housed under the Volkswagen Multivan’s flat floor, saving interior space and lowering the vehicle’s centre of gravity to improve handling. The charging point is located on the right-hand side of the front wing.
The front-wheel drive Multivan is also available with two four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines: a 136PS, 1.5L TSI and a 204PS, 2.0L TSI. A 150PS, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine will join the line-up next year. These powertrains will be paired to a 7-speed DSG gearbox as standard.
