The long-awaited 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback has finally been unveiled for the global markets. It will be built in the U.S. for the first time, with production to commence in late 2021 at Honda’s Greensburg, Indiana auto plant. The Civic hatchback was presented during the Civic Tour “Remix” performance on the Honda Stage YouTube Channel.
Inspired by the Coupe-like profile of European sportbacks, the 2022 Honda Civic hatchback is based on the Civic sedan. The new hatchback is claimed to offer dynamic experience, with ride and handling developed in Europe and an upgraded 6-speed manual gearbox available with both the naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre and 1.5-litre turbocharged engines.
The 2022 Honda Civic hatchback comes with a new standard single-camera Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies. Key features include a 9-inch color touchscreen, Bose premium sound system and a 10.2-inch digital instrument console. The company claims that the windshield pillars have been moved rearward by nearly 2 inches, wheelbase is increased by 1.4 inches and the rear track is 0.5-inch wider. The hatchback’s rear overhang and overall length are 4.9-inches shorter than the Civic Sedan.
The 2022 Honda Civic hatchback shares the interior with the Civic sedan. It comes with cleaner interiors, as it eliminated most of the buttons. The buttons visible are to control the air-conditioning, blinkers, multimedia and the electronic handbrake. Most of the multimedia functions are now added to the floating screen.
The hatchback gets a 10.2-inch instrument console. Drivers also can display a variety of user-selectable information, such as the current music selection and a trip computer, on the left and right side of the screen. The middle of the display is used to indicate the status of various Honda Sensing® safety and driver-assistive systems, and the Civic icon on the screen features brake lights, headlights and turn signals that turn on and off with those functions.
The new Civic hatchback comes with a new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard. The infotainment system is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Sport Touring variant features all-new 9-inch touchscreen, which supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also gets a Qi-compatible wireless charging. The hatchback also gets a 12-speaker premium Bose sound system.
It comes with a wide range of safety and security features including up to 10 airbags, and a full suite of Honda Sensing active safety technologies. It comes equipped with features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, pedestrian and cyclist detection, etc.
The new Civic hatch is powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that churns out a maximum power output of 180bhp and a peak torque of 240Nm. It also gets a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine producing 158bhp and 187Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a CVT automatic and a 6-speed manual.
In the global markets, the Honda Civic hatch will be offered in 4 trim levels – LX, EX-L, Sport and Sport Touring. The new model is 34mm longer, 2mm wider and sits 6mm lower than the older car. It measures 4,549mm in length, 1,801mm in width and 1,415mm in height. The wheelbase has been increased by 36mm to 2,736mm.
