Tata Motors is all set to launch 2 brand new models in the country in January 2020. The company will introduce the long-awaited Altroz premium hatchback next month, which will be followed by the Nexon Electric Vehicle. Besides these 2 new cars, the homegrown automaker will showcase a wide range of cars at the Auto Expo 2020.

Tata Motors is likely to unveil the production version of the H2X mini SUV, Altroz EV and the Gravitas at the biennial event. It is expected that the company could also showcase the concept version of an all-new compact SUV, internally called the Blackbird at the Auto Expo. The Tata Blackbird SUV is likely to be launched in India in early 2021.

To be positioned between the Nexon and the Harrier, the new Blackbird will directly rival the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, Nissan Kicks and others in its category. The company is also using the Chinese Chery Tiggo 5X as the benchmark for the new SUV’s development. Previous media report suggests that the Tata Blackbird could be the re-badged version of the Tiggo 5X.

Speculations were on rife that the Tata Blackbird will be based on the new ALFA modular platform that underpins the Altroz. However, this platform is designed to accommodate products under 4.3 meters in length and the Blackbird is expected to cross this mark and the new platform is not good enough for the new SUV. Adding to it, the company’s OMEGA ARC platform (which underpins the Harrier) will be expensive for a compact SUV. It is reported that the SUV will share most of the components including the platform with the Chery Tiggo 5X.
