Yamaha Aims To Double Market Share; Premium Bikes, Scooters Planned

The Indian arm of the Japanese two-wheeler maker, Yamaha Motor India aims to double its market share in the next 3 years. The company is planning to expand its premium bike and scooter model lineup in the country. With its new, premium product range, the two-wheeler manufacturer will target urban and semi-urban buyers that “have relatively stable incomes”. It will introduce a range of premium bike and scooters ranging between 150cc – 250cc and 125cc – 150cc respectively.

Eishin Chihana, Chairman of Yamaha Motor India Group, has revealed that the company is taking counter measures to deal with the shortage of semiconductors. In order to support its dealers, Yamaha is sourcing semiconductors even at higher prices. He also said that the company is evaluating feasibility of electric two-wheeler in the country. Though, the final decision on the product is yet to be taken.

Upcoming Yamaha electric scooter

In other updates, the Japanese two-wheeler maker unveiled the Yamaha Neo’s electric scooter for the global markets. Its performance is said to be equivalent to its ICE-powered Nep 50cc scooter. The model is based on the Yamaha E02 concept that was previewed at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. It has a hub-mounted electric motor and a swappable lithium-ion battery pack. The e-scooter has lightweight body built and comes equipped with telescopic fork and front disc brakes. Though, it’s devoid of ABS (anti-lock braking system).

The new Yamaha Neo’s electric scooter will be launched in select markets this summer. One must note that the company has no plan to bring in Neo’s in India. The two-wheeler maker has also revealed the Yamaha E01 battery-powered scooter concept. It’s claimed to deliver performance equivalent to its 125cc ICE counterparts. Yamaha is already selling the EC-05 electric scooter in Taiwan, which has been co-developed with Gogoro – a Taiwan-based electric scooter manufacturer.
