Volkswagen Taos Mid-Sized SUV Debut On October 13, 2020

We reported earlier that Volkswagen is readying an all-new mid-sized SUV. The company has officially announced that the new mid-sized SUV will be called the Volkswagen Taos. To be positioned below the Tiguan crossover, the new Taos is scheduled to make global debut on October 13, 2020.

Hein Schafer, Senior Vice President Product Marketing and Strategy at Volkswagen of America, said, “We’re thrilled to announce the name for the newest member of the Volkswagen family. It was important to choose a name that really embodied the nature of the car and the town of Taos, New Mexico was a perfect fit. It’s a small city that offers big things—from outdoor adventure to arts and design and great cuisine.”

Volkswagen Tarek Launch (1)

The Volkswagen Taos mid-sized SUV has been specifically designed for the North American market. The Taos was rumoured to be based on the same platform that also underpins the Tharu in China. However, the teaser suggests that the Taos has some design changes and looks different from the Tarek and the Tharu. There is a strip of LEDs run along the front of the vehicle that connects the headlights.

The Volkswagen Tharu mid-sized SUV on sale in China is available with two engine options- a 148bhp, 1.4-litre turbocharged and a 184bhp, 2.0-litre turbocharged. A 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox driving the power to the front wheels is available as standard. The top-spec model also gets all-wheel-drive system. The new SUV is expected to be produced at VW Group’s Puebla factory in Mexico, which was earlier used to produce the Beetle. The new SUV will be launched in 2021. In India, the German automaker will launch the Tiguan facelift and the Taigun mid-sized SUV in 2021.
