Volkswagen Taigun In Production Avatar Revealed: Creta, Seltos Rival

The long-awaited Volkswagen Taigun has officially been unveiled in production avatar in India. This is the second model under the VW Group’s India 2.0 project, and the second product to be based on the MQB AO IN platform. This is the same platform that also underpins the Skoda Kushaq mid-sized SUV.

The new VW Taigun is scheduled to be launched in the mid-2021, before Diwali 2021. Skoda will first launch the Kushaq in June-July, while the Taigun could be launched by August-September 2021.

Engine Specs

The new Volkswagen Taigun will be offered with two petrol engine options – a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged and a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged. The 1.0L engine is capable of producing 113bhp and 175Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.

The 1.5-litre TSI engine churns out 147bhp of maximum power and 250Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG automatic.

GT Line variant

Volkswagen has announced that the top-of-the-line variant will feature the 1.5-litre petrol engine. These variants will come with GT Line badging.

Segment-largest Wheelbase

The new Volkswagen Taigun has a wheelbase of 2,651mm, which is longer than the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos – 2,610mm. In fact, the wheelbase is 15mm longer than the Jeep Compass (2,636mm). The SUV looks smaller than the Creta and the Seltos. It offers a boot space of 385-litres, which can be further extended by folding the second row seat.

Volkswagen Taigun Design

Measuring around 4.2 meters in length, the VW Taigun shares some of the design highlights from global Volkswagen SUVs including the T-ROC and the Tiguan. The SUV gets projector headlamp setup with full LED illumination and smoked effect. The LED DRls are integrated to the lower end of the headlamp. It gets chrome highlight on the grille and the bumper. Design highlights include chrome door handles, silver roof rails, blacked-out B-pillar, shark fin antenna, LED tail-lamps with a connected bar, and LED turn indicators. TAIGUN lettering can be seen on the tailgate.

Expected Price & Competition

The new Volkswagen Taigun is expected to be priced around Rs 10 lakh to Rs 17 lakh. It will be positioned against the segment-leaders Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos.
