Upcoming Diesel Cars In 2022 – Creta Facelift To Meridian

Seeing the rising fuel prices, automakers in India have decided to completely remove the diesel engine from its line-up. However, few are still offering fuel efficient diesel cars in the country. In this article, we talk about the list of upcoming new diesel cars in the Indian market in next 10 months –

1. Toyota Hilux Lifestyle Pick-up

Japanese automaker, Toyota will release the prices of the new Hilux lifestyle pick-up in March 2022. The lifestyle pick-up is developed on the IMV-2 (Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle) platform that also underpins the Fortuner and the Innova Crysta. The new model will be powered by a 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel engine that is capable of producing 204bhp of power and 420Nm of torque. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic. With automatic gearbox, the engine offers 500Nm of torque.

2. Jeep Compass Trailhawk Facelift

Jeep will launch the updated version of the Compass Trailhawk in the country by March 2022. The trail rated version will come with design changes, upgraded interior and better approach and departure angles. It will continue to use the same 2.0L Multijet diesel engine producing a maximum power of 170bhp and 350Nm of torque. The motor will be paired to a 9-speed automatic gearbox. The SUV will come with an Activ Drive 4X4 system, Rock mode and hill descent control.

3. Jeep Meridian

Jeep has officially announced to launch a new 7-seater SUV, called Jeep Meridian in the country by mid-2022. It is basically the 7-seater version of the Compass, which is already on sale in select international markets as Commander. The upcoming Jeep Meridian 7-seater SUV will be powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, which is likely to get a 48V mild hybrid system. It is likely to produce around 200bhp of power, and will be paired to a 9-speed automatic gearbox with AWD system.

4. Hyundai Creta Facelift

Hyundai will launch the new Creta facelift in the country before the end of 2022. The new model will come with significantly revised front fascia and upgraded interior. The SUV could also receive ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System), a 360 degree camera and an updated Bluelink connected car tech. The SUV will retain the existing engine options – a 113bhp, 1.5L NA petrol, a 113bhp, 1.5L turbo-diesel and a 138bhp, 1.4L turbo-petrol. The diesel version will continue to be offered with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.

5. Hyundai Venue Facelift

Hyundai has started testing the Venue facelift in the country. The new model is reportedly to be launched by mid-2022. It will come with significantly updated design changes. The SUV will debut the brand’s new design language, which we have already seen on the new Tucson. The company is also preparing the N-line variant, which is likely to arrive in 2023.

The SUV likely to retain the existing engine set-up comprising a 83bhp/113Nm, 1.2L NA petrol, a 118bhp/175Nm, 1.0L turbocharged petrol and a 99bhp/240Nm, 1.5L turbo-diesel. Transmission choices include a 5-speed MT with 1.2L petrol, a 6-speed MT as standard, an iMT and 7-speed DCT with 1.0L turbo-unit. Similar to the Sonet, the Venue diesel could also receive an automatic gearbox option. With 6AT, this engine should offer 113bhp and 250Nm of torque.

6. New Mahindra Scorpio

Buoyed by excellent response for Thar & XUV700, Mahindra is now preparing to launch the new Scorpio in the country. The new model will come with all-new design and feature-loaded cabin. The next-gen Scorpio is expected to be offered with two engine options –  a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol and a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel. The diesel engine is likely to be offered with two states of tunes – 130bhp/300Nm & close to 155bhp/360Nm. Transmission choices are likely to include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic. The higher variants will also receive a 4×4 drivetrain along with terrain modes & drive modes.

7. 5-door Force Gurkha

Force Motors is testing the long wheelbase version of the Gurkha SUV. The 5-door Force Gurkha will be a 3-row model, which will have captain seats in the second and third-row. The new model is expected to share the same set-up of engine and gearbox combination as the 3-door model. It is powered by a 2.6-litre turbo-diesel engine that churns out 90bhp of power and 250Nm of torque. Transmission duties will be performed by a 5-speed manual gearbox. Similar to the standard model, it might come with the 4WD (four-wheel drive) and 2WD (two-wheel drive) options along with manual locking differentials controlled via levers on the floor console.
